CB's Grim Frequencies IC -- COMPLETE

"Damnit!" Otter swore, and ran over to stand shoulder to shoulder with T-dawg. Oh yeah, fish in a barrel. Or octopus in a toilet. They weren't going to be able to STOP it, but they could sure give it something to think about before coming back!

[roll0] to hit for [roll1] damage!

J.R. follows suit and places himself on the other side of T, opening fire yet again. Even if he misses and splinters the toilet maybe they could stop it from getting away.

Round 6, combat

Initiative:
Otter 26
Cyril 25
Thrall 17
J.R. 14
T-dawg 12
Feral 5

Otter ran up and shoved J.R. out of the way. She stood next to T-dawg, lowered her gun, and fired, hitting the thrall and dealing 7 points of damage. Cyril stepped inside the bathroom and focused mental energy on the thrall thrashing in the toilet bowl. The thrall immediately quieted, and both the thrall and Cyril were covered in a dusting of fairy dust--like dandruff.

[sblock=Cyril]The target for daze specifies "one person." LINK. Other F/X specify "you" or "one creature," so the book seems to distinguish between categories. The thrall is a creature, not a person. When I check the hardcover entry for a definition of "Target" in the F/X section, it refers me to the same definition for Target in the Spell section on pp 331; however, pp 331 is vague and not that helpful: "Some spells have a specific target or targets. You use these spells directly on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself. [ . . . ] If you cast a targeted spell on the wrong sort of target, such as using a daze spell on a humanoid with 5 Hit Dice, the spell has no effect." A humanoid is probably not a creature per se, but I also found THIS that tells me the rules use "creatures" and "characters" interchangeably in the F/X section. TLDR -- Cyril can use daze on the thrall until we find a definitive rule otherwise.

Action Points replenish at each character level, yes. Normally, a character can see the die roll before deciding whether to spend an AP. Cyril didn't need to spend an AP here. The thrall failed its Will save all on its own.[/sblock]

J.R. pushed Otter back out of the way and fired. He hit the thrall, dealing 6 points of damage. The thrall ceased all movement and slumped half in the toilet, half out. The shimmery translucent substance on it dissipated, just as it changed color to vivid blue.

Feral sped off for the kitchen to find baking soda. Outside in the hallway, Esmeralda opened her eyes and sucked in a lungful of air. She tried to sit up but Marks held her down with his hands and knees. The girl started to thrash, prompting Marks to yell, "Little help over here, please!"

OOC: Well done, all. END OF COMBAT. Please post at will. T-dawg did not get to state an action for Round 6, but that is because combat ended before his turn.

GM: Thrall -2 / 28 hp DEAD/DYING

T-dawg rushes over and helps Marks to hold Esmerelda still, averting his eyes from her ravaged body the whole time. He croons in an oddly soft voice "Shhh... it'll be alright.. just hold still and Marks will sort you out". Those watching aren't sure whether he's trying to comfort Esmerelda or himself.

OOC: He'll use his actions from the previous round to do this... probably no rolls needed to restrain Esmerelda, but just in case here they are (T-dawg is no longer fatigued):
Touch attack: [roll0] (assumed additional +4 as she is prone)
Grapple check: [roll1] (assume assistance from Marks on this, but I don't think the prone modifier applies here so haven't added it. If it does add another +4)

[sblock]Here's the link to the same SRD, but it's the psionic version. Same text, they're apparently synonymous. Look at the last sentence of the Manifester Level section, it looks like the formatting didn't carry over.

I am guessing daze itself wasn't really written all that well as the target section says one person, but the text of the power implies it affects creatures of less than 5HD, since it specifically excludes those same targets with 5HD or more (also if they are larger than Medium size). Edit: reading the D20 Modern spell version, it seems like it is intended for humanoids only. Not sure why the psychic power is written so much more inexactly. Screw it, I'm downloading the actual files from WotC to see what they say. I'll keep the power, but it's even more useless now if restricted to humanoids.

Oh yeah, as requested, I added the displays to my character sheet a few weeks ago. Daze has mental and material displays. For Cyril that means fairy dust looking vaguely like dandruff appears around him and the target creature hears the word "Esquire" as if whispered by hundreds of voices in their head.[/sblock]

Cyril stood there stunned, his gun hanging limply by his side, pajama bottoms soaked in piss. "What... what... what the f()*& was that! Was that an alien?!? You didn't say $%^& about aliens, Marks!" Glancing over, the former lawyer calmed down when he saw that Marks was busy with administering first aid to the unconscious girl.

Otter did the thing she, at that moment, believed she'd been born to do. She flicked the safety back on her gun, and jammed it down her waistband, and said in the closest approximation of a gravelly voice she could make...

"Welcome to Earth."

Then she wrecked it a little by adding to Cyril as an aside, "I'm not dragging it's slimy ass out of there with my bare hands, by the way. Go get a coat hanger or something."

J.R.'s hands drop to his side and now that his grip is relaxed there is a slight shake to them.

Water is pouring out of the toilet onto the ground, subtly turning into a light red as it merges with human blood on the ground.

He sloshes forward and grabs hold of a tentacle, dragging it into the middle of the bathroom.

"Or that. That works too. Oh hey! Knife!"

She grabbed the knife where it fell and advanced on the creature, with dissection in her eyes.

Cautiously, Otter poked the monster with the sharp tip, testing the toughness...and seeing if it was going to suddenly wake up.
