here's the situation: our mage has just knocked out three enemies with color spray. my character is opposed to killing them, but he doesn't want them waking up to cause trouble any time soon. can i perform a coup de grace with a sap?

It's a bit cheasy but I would just beat them with the sap one-by-one.
They won't be able to get out of the hogtie before they're out.

If you do around 50 points of damage they'll be out for a few days per RAW, with no chance of death (though if they don't get water the DM is within rights to say "perished of dehydration").

what is the RAW on this, anyway? can nonlethal damage really exceed hp+10?
There's no limit. Many people have suggested house rules on it, but quite frankly if I were to house rule it at all, it would be case-by-case depending on the weapon. For example, a limit when you're pounding someone with your fists seems reasonable.

I didn't realize there was limit on the amount of subdual damage you could do. Where are you finding this hp+10 rule?

I believe this was referring to the negative 10 hit points (hp + 10) and you are dead rule.

Hmmm, I'm not sure. Nonlethal damage is added in it's own "HP pool", not subtracted from your current HP total. So I am not sure what he was referring to here exactly.
