Character goal?

Dog Moon

Adventurer
I have a player who's trying to think of a goal for his character, a Thri-Kreen ninja. He isn't a member of EnWorld (Shame on him, I know), so I'm asking for him. Anyone have any ideas?

Avoiding Raid, and Black Flag products?

Maybe finding the person or persons that attacked a friend or his village?

If he doesn't have a draw into the character maybe he should look for a new character he has more attachment with?

S

Maybe he wants to kill the inventor of roach motel?

to eat the best rat on a stick ever?
to make it with the most desirable ladybug ever?
to become the most famous hero of all time?
to get equal rights for insects? this includes every armour store also stocking suits that fit his kind.
to save the world from the alien bug invasion?
to find a shape change specialist to turn him into a human?

I mentioned to him to him that without goals, his character might become boring.

I guess I should mention a little background if I want help. He has a background for his character, which involves temporarily becoming a pirate because he thought for some reason a certain ship seemed interesting [the pirate ship]. At the end of his short pirate career [a couple of months] the ship was attacked and he was enslaved by an evil group]. He escaped with his only friend, a parrot which seems to be more than what it really is, though he has no idea what is up with the parrot. He escaped to a city of monsters [basically a normal city above ground except that instead of humans, it is a city populated by various creatures and because of the city's neutral alignment, it has been accepted into the world society] where he began his thieving life. It wasn't long before he was caught by a guild/temple of Mask because he was thieving on their turf. He was accepted into their guild and later sent into the city's army to be a spy in the army's ranks. That's where the campaign begins, with him being put into a group with the rest of the party.

His idea for a goal was 'to steal stuff' basically. He doesn't know what he wants and is fishing for ideas. I'm not sure how many of the ideas given above are serious though, which is why I mention this. He was thinking maybe becoming the leader of the guild, but he wants something a little more...interesting and less generic.

I don't know, why would you need such a goal?

Most people have no specific goal in life (besides getting rich and having a good time at it, that is ;)).

A "realistic" person does not have one big goal in life usually (only very few have). Most have dozens upon dozens of tiny goals, however, but they change all the time.

Honestly, A good goal for this character might just be "Go where the wind takes me, and have fun in the process". That ends up being a pretty common goal for rogues and their brothers (weapon-finnessed) arms.

Insects and a good time?

Maybe he should content himself with smaller goals? Whats t he town like? How are is fellow Thri-Kreen treated? How do they live well? Is there someone in the town who will pay well for his services.

I confess, I think Insect based characters are not my favourite. I imagine an insect mind is better as an NPC with limited goals and wants. Creature comforts for an insect are pretty alien and they often seem to be part of a collective mind that gets boring to play well. IMHO.

Maybe he shouldn't give up on trying to be a pirate?

I agree. I tried to have my players create goals for their PCs and few really latched onto the idea. There is nothing wrong with an adventurer who just reacts to the events around her/him.

That pretty much describes my character's motivation. Nothing wrong with it at all. The only thing I'd add is a desire to honor his family name. Other party members have more deliberate motives. My char is the one who keeps coaxing the others to delay a bit, and peek over the next horizon.
