Characters Going Epic

Dagger75

Epic Commoner
Any of of you who had your group epic, how did you do it. Did they just get enough XP to hit 21st level or was it some sort of quest?

And if a quest what did you have them do, what did they fight? My group is 5 or 6 levels away from epic and I better get started now. Just looking for some pointers.

Thanks

Well, we're 18th level and not epic yet, but our campaign already has some really epic feel... last time we defeated a half-god (with a frickin' +7 damage reduction!!! and pretty much immune to magic) and right now we're to reassemble an artifact (we already have the first part, but each is connected to some greater dragon (of the evil kind) and not exactly easy to retrieve), which is somehow connected to the fact, that my character will play a role in a clash of the gods, fighting as one of those god's champion... uhm... I should never have taken that sword, I suppose... well, well, after that uber half-god dude, things can't really get worse...

Of course, when the day comes, things will get worse... :D

Also, my character's motivation nowadays, wouldn't it be for her loyalty to her adventuring friends, is mostly to become a member of the nobility in the neighbouring empire to be able to marry her lover, who happens to be the son of one of the highest ranked nobles there... to live happy and peaceful and... yeah, right, as if that's ever gonna happen! ;)

Going to the big leagues

Our gaming group has two campaigns on the border of Epic. For our groups, our DM's put our heads together to brainstorm things that would be good "long-term" threats that were behind the many plots in our combined campaigns. Our hope is to "open the doors" to Epic for both campaigns, and more...

As we did our brainstorming, we realized that there were many heroic campaigns from 1st and 2nd ed that people might like to play, so we're now working on a way to combine these older campaigns into the "history" of our world.

The relevant issues seem to be that "Epic" challenges typically have an "earth shattering" impact, so it's best to begin with the end in mind, and identify several major threats that could be quickly developed or uncovered by your parties. At the same time, it's important to keep in mind that these threats haven't taken over the world to this point...so why not?

We've not made the transition into Epic (ie, played the 20th level module), but I'll most likely use the same format of story that I've always used, except instead of "dugeon-delving" they'll be have to be more challenges like "saving the village" and "protecting the innocents" ala comic book superheroes.

Good luck with your campaign.

Depends on your campaign. Probably not the answer you're looking for. In my high power and magic campaign I'll just let the PC's roll over to 21 but in someone elses you might have to get approval from a god.

Going for the Epic

Personally I feel that transition into Epic levels should be marked by some truely momentous event, the PCs should experience something normally beyond the powers of mortals. After all, they are now entering a level of power where they can start doing things just about everybody else believes impossible! The characters should feel like they've really transcended into something more than they were before, and that they've really earned it! The experience should almost be bordering on ascensinon to divinity, the way I see it.

Just my two bits worth, though...

My players' characters will just clock from 20 to 21. No huge event planned, because they're not really the same level, and it'd be hard to time it JUST right. Feh...

Though I WILL have Epic NPCs that will humble them before they pass 20... :D
