Charming: Do they remember?

If you cast Charm person or Charm monster, do they realize they were charmed after the spell wore off? I think they used to back in previous editions but don't remember reading anything about it in 3.5.

Well, they might get suspicious about why they treated that scumbag like their best friend. Then, they remember about that magic thing going on, and than add two and two together...

Ah I see. I guess they'd realize they weren't being 'themself'.
actually no they wouldn't. unless they make the spellcraft check.

as the charm means they do things they think are reasonable or get another save.

after it is over. they may have regrets for having (failed the save) and done things that were not "quite" right. but that doesn't mean they know it was magic nor a charm.

they just return to their old ways.

Remember that time your wife told you not to eat the last of the breadsticks, but you did anyway? That was my charm spell, mwuahahaha! Did you realize it? No.

I knew a girl once who had me quite charmed. Was it magic or just her?

Unless you have Spellcraft, you'd never know. But you might always wonder.

I use intellligence checks in my games to figure out if you were under a spell or not. It makes a bit more sense to me. I don't really need to know magic to know that if i did something unlike me and I live in a magical world with easy charm spells that i must have been under some type of spell. I'd ask a spellcheck if he wants to identify the spell but a basic intelligence check with the dc configured to how out of the ordinary the action was.

I like the answer (raised here by Thanee and diaglo) that a spellcraft check is required.

If you are a low level wizard, charm person would often be too risky to use if the guard or official charmed were to later recognize that he was under magical influence. Instead of "charm person" it might better be named "make enemy". On the other hand, if the guard had to make a DC 21 spellcraft check... well, then it could be quite a useful little spell.

True, I can see where it makes it better for the PC, but what is the guard thinking. I let those people in, it must have been because they were so damn convincing ;). After the spell wears off they have to think about there actions. If the actions are minor "such as opening a gate" then i'd make a high intelligence check. It wasn't that out of the ordinary. But if the offiense was " run from the guardhouse you have sworn to protect" I"d have to take a step back and offer a lower dc after the spell's duration.

Wouldn't also depend on how magical your world is?
