Say he's not going to do it again and keep on doing it, forcing you to escalate or keeping bitching about the same problem? Complain loudly about your "unfounded accusations", start a screaming match and storm out? Many people feel it's easier to overlook the cheating then try and deal with it head-on.

Ahh, I see. My friends are different than your friends if that's the case. My friends would be embarrased at being found out at cheating. There was one case of "cheating" years ago, and the Player did it by accident, and we still give him flak (in a friendly rubbing way). If one of my friends were actually cheating, repeatedly, and gave that much issue about it, he'd probably be too embarrased to show up again.

That's the kind of behavior I expect from random strangers, not my friends.

huh?? Explain please, what's a dice bowl?

I'm guessing its a bowl that you roll your dice in. Hard to cheat that way.

EDIT: Note that I rarely actually look at my Players' dice rolls because I know they aren't cheating. I don't need to look. They'll tell me honestly what they roll. I know that I wouldn't like gaming with someone who I had to babysit by watching every move they make.

It is the DM's job to make the adventure FUN and CHALLENGING for the players. Occasionaly it is part of his job description to cheat in order to accomplish his job. This is perfectly fine.

The problem is when a player cheats they take away the CHALLENGING part of the game for themself and for the other players. When Frank the barbarian cheats to make himself crit when he shouldnt have and does 175 damage to the giant who dies in one hit, where was the challenge for the other players? Frank may have just ruined my game session. If Frank consistently cheats like this then he may be ruining the fun I have every week, and why should I even bother to show up and try to play fair?

Cheating players should be stopped. They dont necissarily need to be kicked out of the game or even confronted. All that needs to happen is rules changed so all players die rolls are public and easily seen so cheating rolls is impossible.

The way I see it, there are different reasons (and times) when cheating is okay.

For instance, to avoid everyone getting killed. Do players think rolling up characters all the time is fun? Most do not.

To change the outcome of a story/plot in a more favorable way. For instance, to save an NPC's life, which hangs on a roll to get information out of someone.

Voted "care."

I wouldn't accept a friend pulling an ace out of their sleeve when we play cards. I wouldn't accept a friend adjusting the scorecard while I'm not looking when we go bowling. I wouldn't accept a friend kicking his ball into the hole, when we go golfing.

The fact that I'm playing a game with friends is not a license to cheat.

It does, however, mean that the utmost measure of tact is required when addressing the situation.

Those are really bad times to cheat in my book. Take it as it rolls and live (or die) with it.
That's why we roll dice!

Just a random observation, but the poll results so far (22% - 72%) are very close to the results in the "Have you ever stolen an RPG book?" thread a week or two ago.

Significant, or just coincidence?

I don't know about that, but I bet a lot of people aren't telling the truth. I bet most have gotten books off of grokster/limewire/PtoP websites. I think the 22% is probably just more honest then the 72%. I also bet that most of you have cheated the game in some form, sometime. Whether glancing at an upcoming adventure module, to fudging some die rolls, I really don't believe that most are as innocent as they say. Just my .02.
