Here are the pieces:

PAWN - one square movement forward, or take on square forward diagonal.
ROOK - any number of squares forward or sideways
KNIGHT - one squares orthogonally, one diagonal. jumps
BISHOP - any number of squares diagonally
KING - one square orthogonally or diagonally
QUEEN - any number of squares diagonally or orthogonally.
[nitpick]Pawns are not pieces.[/nitpick]

Other than that, spot on. In fact, I think I made a similar point in one of the other threads (although I may have just thought about doing so).

Chess 4E?

And Castling.

Yeah... gotta love those exceptions.

Cheers!

Yes remembering all those exceptions makes chess complicated and unfun. Someone needs to do a new edition of chess where any piece can just move x number of squares in any direction.

And while they are at it they should get rid of those boring pawns and replace them with Dragonborne. Only Grognards enjoy moving pawns on the board.

And you should make it where you cant lose your queen. I always found losing my queen to be disappointing and unfun. If the queen could never die it would be way kewl.

:D

I always disliked losing my King... very unfun!

Rock/paper/scissors FTW: the only game that was ever truly non-symmetrically balanced for all possible play options... at least until the splatbooks ruined it, of course.

The game was alot more elegant before people started wanting to play Dynamite, Dragons, and Aliens. Back in my day, a good scissors player could put enough characterization into this sign that he could be a cockroach or cowboy. You didn't need this whole new class and gesture system that the kids are scrambling for.
