So, after reading the poll's result, I began the following thread, which is my take on hobgoblins/orcs as PC race. Seeing the other result in the poll, I may also give them racial feats to turn them into more beast-like brutes, and others to become perverted by supernatural evil (to make them more like tieflings/changelings eventually).

So in the homebrew I've been working on, I'm using the following races:

Human
Elf
Dwarf
Lupin (humanoid dog creature)
Diabolus (fiendish creature)
Luminoth (angelic creature)
Kindred (think Disney's Gargoyles)
Giant (from Arcana Unearthed)
Goblin
Warforged

As you can see, I can't really answer the poll, because I'd rather have a mixture of thematically and aesthetically interesting races than gnomes, halflings, half-elves, and half-orcs.

Of course, humans are just degenerate giants created when the Idra (the progenor race of the goblinoids and an offshoot of elves) accidentally set loose a genetically engineered virus that was meant to pacify the giant society that was their main competitor for control of the mainland. Yes, it succeeded in creating neanderthal man, but it also ravaged the Idra, turning them into goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears. All this because the LeShay (the original elven people) couldn't decide if alchemy or science was the proper course for their kind. The race that became elves picked alchemy (eastern-inspired arcane magic elementalism), fleeing to the island of Avalos, while the idra picked science.

But enough of my thread hijack.

Shifters. Very good concept.

Second choice, lizardmen, but done so as not to require monstruous levels.

Third choice, killoren (fey from Races of the Wild).

I usually play human characters.

I like the warforged, but my liking for them is specific to the warforged; I'm not that fond of other construct races I've seen, especially nothing than can be described as a "bio-droid" (though Mike Mearls' ironborn are good too).

I dislike subraces, for the same reason Keith Baker does: there's no good reason to implement biological (mechanical) changes because you live on mountain peaks rather than in forest glades. This is doubly so given that D&D histories are usually measured in thousands of years, not the millions "real" evolution requires, and that the worst offenders - elves - would have even fewer generations during that time to evolve in the first place.

"Brutish" races generally fall into the trap of being stereotyped as brutish or savage. If I were going to include orcs or goblins in a setting, I'd want some variety; Eberron does well in this regard with its varied orc tribes and fallen goblinoid empire.

I'm not going to opine about every choice!

I selected "demonic races" - though I don't think the changeling fits in that category, at all - because I like settings with noticeable interaction with fiends and celestials, and "fiendtouched" races showcase these elements.

Well, I like to play non-Human races. I do often look for exotic races, but as long as it's not human I'm happy. I live a human's life so don't like to play one.

My preference would actually be to remove halflings and go with humans, dwarves, elves, and gnomes.

That being said, I like the idea of those who have been touched by forces beyond mortal ken, so tieflings and aasimar are cool in my book.
