D&D 4E Chris Perkins announces major Eberron changes for 4e

Writing has begun on the 4E Eberron campaign setting, which releases in 2009. James Wyatt and Keith Baker are exchanging emails like mad. I'm mostly just watching from the sidelines and making sure they don't add robots to the setting. As you've heard, we're not advancing the timeline, but we are making some minor tweaks and additions to (a) accommodate the 4E rules and (b) make the campaign material eminently plunderable. (Okay, "plunderable" isn't a word, but if you're a DM, you know what I mean.) We're adding some new villains, including a magebred human (that's right, a magebred human) of Cyran descent and a figure from Eberron's past that has returned from oblivion to wage war on the high seas. We're also removing some of the superfluous apostrophes from a few of the setting's proper nouns (although Q'barra will remain Q'barra). D&D Insider will be previewing many of the new features of the setting after June, as well as helping players and DMs continue their Eberron campaigns as 4E games.

Doesn't seem major to me.

Too late! ;)

As long as James and Keith are attached to it, I'm happy - those two were the heart and soul for Eberron in 2004. (Some people treat Keith like he's the only voice of Eberron, but he's admitted before how much influence James had in many of its elements, too.) I'll be interested in what they plan to do.

Apostrophes aside, Eberron is the setting that might draw full into the new edition. The implied pulp/noir style of the setting is a lot of fun and a much better fit to illustrate the strengths of 4E than FR is, at least IMHO. It will be interesting to see what changes they make.

Give me my apostrophes or give me death!

Renaming is kinda lame, but meh. Its not going to stop me from buying back into Eberron.

I agree; Eberron is pretty ideal for the changes in 4E. Heck, they had an action point system in the ECS. They had magic that really affected the world in an everyday way; more than just the cliche 'That's the desert created by the ancient wizard war'. And they really encouraged that pulp feel. As characters level, their exploits make the continent-wide newspaper. Less Lord of the Rings, more Knight's Tale. I've enjoyed running the published adventures in it, hoping to wrap up in a few months and then start a new campaign there in 4E.

I'd think this bit of news was somewhat more interesting re: current events.

"— I learned that we are, indeed, goin' to Gen Con! Clearly, one of the big thrusts of the show will be 4E. We have a cap on the number of R&D people we can send, and I *did* attend last year, so I'm not sure whether I'll be attending this year. I should know in the next few days, one way or the other."

The less apostrophes the better. They aren't vowels, people!

I AM glad that Eberron isn't getting the same backhanded treatment FR is getting. Since, you know, I like Eberron.
