(CoC)Toughness

Does any one think that having toughness add three hps to your masive damage threshold as well as hps hurt anything? Take toughness 8 times and have a masive damage breaking point of 34 instead of 10, still shoggoth bait as I see it but still an edge.

We are talking about an investigator who still goes insane and still get eaten even at 20th level, didn't you ever know anyone who takes a lickin and keeps ticken? This would be useful for cultists as well. Its just 10 is awfully fragile, that thread on d20 vs d100 CoC does make it look like d20 is already the more deadly of the two.

Also toughness has always sucked, at least in this system theres a way to make it feel like a worth while buy.

The player would still be silly to take an action stance vs mythos entities, his only advantage would be to live longer and go insane IF the player didn't want any other feats in a 20 level career.

Not to torque this into House Rules or anything, but one option might be to limit how many times a PC can take the Feat (max. 1-2).

Toughness toughness

Without wanting to whip up a toughness sucks debate there are tons of things to do to beef it up.

I use the top 50% of your hit die. Which means that every level you go up when you roll for hit points you have to roll in the top 50% of your hit die, which means you always have average or better HPs.

A good rule for the Massive Damage could be to either apply the 3 HP to both Massive and HPs or to add 10% of the Max HP to the Massive Damage, it isnt much but gives characters the feeling they are improving and are "safer". which they really arent...ever.

Which is a HUGE part of CoC, the idea of easily being killed. The threat of death should always be lingering in the PCs mind.

Anyhow, there are always fixes for things you dont like.

I like the idea of Toughness increasing the Death from Massive Damage threshold, actually! One thing that bothers me about d20 CoC is that the difference between the tanks and the milquetoasts is narrowed; giving Toughness this extra "oomph" would help define certain characters as being, well, tough compared to the retired professors, lawyers, and psychiatrists populating the typical CoC PC group.
