Combat Stability (PHB2)

Benefit: You gain a +4 bonus on checks or rolls to resist bull rush, disarm, grapple, overrun and trip attempts made against you.

Considering you're grappling.

When do you get the bonus?

Whenever your opponent makes a check and you oppose?
When you try to escape the grapple and your opponent opposes?
All grapple checks?

"Resist" is the key word there. Are you resisting a grapple, or are you initiating one? Simple.

Once you're in a grapple, the bonus no longer applies. (Unless there's some other rules text in the feat description.)

mmm, I think you're right.

the second key word would be "Attempts" I guess.

So you get the +4 bonus on the initial opposed grapple check when an opponent tries to grapple you. But not afterwards. Not even when you try to disengage from the grapple using an opposed grapple check (or escape from a pin).

Mud Wrestling

Do you not thinik it would also apply when your opponent tries to do anything to you while you are grappling?

Example: You are already in a grapple with an opponent and the opponent attempts to do unarmed damage to you. You roll opposed grapple checks. Would you get the +4 there?

Thinking about it.. I can see it either way

No.

You are not resisting grappling attempts. Once in a grapple, you are not attempting a grapple again, you are performing actions within a grapple. Attack, escape, move, etc.

Shield Ward is another good PHB2 feat for this since it gives you your shield bonus to touch AC to resist special combat manuevers. Very handy if you have a decent shield and you can get the bonus higher than +4.
