I did not see one of these for comic books, so I thought I would make one. If I missed it, mods please delete.

So let's have a thread where we can talk comics of all kinds. I tend toward supers, but I also try and read a cross section of sci-fi, fantasy, and noir/crime stuff. Every one in a while I will dip into horror (Something Is Killing The Children).

I have not been reading comics consistently for a while, though, and I wonder what really great stories I have missed over the last 10 years or so. I am seriously considering re-subbing to both Marvel unlimited and the DC equivalent if there are books folks think I should really check out. Really good stuff I buy in big beautiful hardcover, though.

The only comic book I still buy regularly is Usage Yojimbo. Stan Sakai's narratives are always top notch.

I do, however, still buy the occasional trade paperback compiling stories from days gone bye, but even then I don't buy very many of them. I did drop a big chunk of change on Marvel Omnibus: The Micronauts. It's pretty gorgeous. I always loved Michael Golden's art for the title, same for Pat Broderick's art. And the revolutionary jargon used by the rebels characterizing the rich sure seems fresh and relevant today.

I think the last comic book that I bought and read the entire run of was Joe Hill's Locke and Key, which was a masterpiece IMO.

I finally gave up on comics in the early 2000s. One of the titles I read regularly was Nightwing, and the storyline at the time had Dick joining the Bludhaven police department. That storyline was interrupted by a Batfamily crossover event where Bruce Wayne is accused of murder and locked up. So the comic I read regularly was interrupted by the story in a comic that I didn't read, and if I wanted to follow the Wayne murder story I then had to go on and purchase other Batfamily comics like Birds of Prey. It was the final straw that made me walk away. I've only picked up a few graphic novels since then.

It's fun to see how my favorite characters have changed over the years. I was playing a Spider-Man video game a few weeks back and there was a villain named Screwball. She's a social media influencer who does dangerous stunts to gain viewers. It's fun to see how things have changed.

I've mostly been reading Marvel Unlimited to visit older stuff for the first time, like the early New Mutants run, a few cosmic Avengers storylines, and the original Runaways. This is also because I run a Marvel game that's set around the time of Civil War (but is diverging significantly, since the CW was just averted) and is slightly X-Men focused, so I'm trying to get a handle on characters connected to that.

Aside from that, I was part of a comic reading club from about 2016-2021 and almost all the best stuff we read was older circa late 90s to early 2010s, I hate to say it. Stuff like Happy, We3 (super tragic!), All-Star Superman and Superman: Red Son. Image had a few things come out more recently that were pretty good, but more than a few them would fall apart after the first or second trade (Isola, I'm looking at you!). I Hate Fairyland was a nice exception. I love that series more than anything.

I quit DC hard with Heroes in Crisis for what they did to Wally. I did read their "apology tour" but I still have not been able to stomach mainline DC since.

I have been a fan of Marvel Comics for decades, since I was a kid in the late '80s. Like you, I haven't been reading and collecting much recently (I think the last regular comics I bought were 2015's Secret Wars, and that was after a long drought). My experience with DC is mostly through movies and TV, with a few prominent exceptions. I'm also a huge fan of supers gaming, though I haven't had the opportunity to play in a while. I loved all the Marvel games, especially FASERIP, and am looking forward to playing more of the new Marvel Multiverse RPG. I also enjoy Mutants & Masterminds, and was involved in a long-running DC Heroes campaign I still remember fondly. I still pick up the Marvel Encyclopedia when they update it.

As far as non-supers stuff, about the only comics I've really gotten into are Marvel's Star Wars lines, Scott Pilgrim, and the collected Order of the Stick graphic novels.
