Compelling D&D Images

Here's three more that have always screamed D&D to me:

Did anyone mention Jim Holloway? I think he still does some work for Sovereign Stone and possibly other d20 companies. I would also consider him one of the people who had some really compelling D&D images. I liked his drawing of that sorceror fighting off mongrelmen in one of the B series modules (I think).

Is this the pic that you were thinking of?

If so, it is from I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City by David Cook. The pic is of Aratheas, a female elven 6th level Magic-User... I mean Wizard.

Let's see who remembers these ads? Sure the art ranges from bad to pretty decent, but who cares. Again, all images are links to much larger versions.

Thanks for posting these. I was going to say that Willingham's D&D adds in my micronauts comics got me into D&D. Thanks Bill, you started an obsession. Now to find his Ironwood comics again

I'm convinced that the "old" iconics are under the Pit Fiend's (2nd ad) feet...dead.

Looks a LOT like Jozan's armor...and maybe Nebin?

All new Iconics in this ad? I don't think that's Hennet...my money is on a new iconic druid...new elven ranger...and Gimble.

Damn...if our (EN World's) Regdar hears that he is dead at the feet of the Pit Fiend...he'll be SOOOO PO'd...in the third person of course

Great stuff. Seeing Willingham is a treat. I completely forgot about him.

1st and 2nd edition material certainly deserves special mention and I will admit that it is definitely better than 3rd edition material in one important way and that is that previous to 3rd edition many of the illustrations displayed a scene.

Whereas 3rd edition illustrations concern themselves with showing us what an orc looks like or what a dragon looks like, previous editions went farther and showed us something actually occuring in the illustration, be it a mage summoning a monster, a group of adventurers combating evil or a thief disarming a trap.

3rd edition is a lot more about what something looks like. 1st and 2nd edition is a lot more about showing you a particular event.

That said, I still prefer the quality of 3rd edition with a few exceptions.

Can someone please explain how to attach an image to a post so I can show you some of my favorites instead of posting links?

Anything by Erol Otis, he drew scenes that scream out "Dungeon Crawl" to me. He drew great oozes and slimes and all kinds of nasty beasties. Plus the classic cover of the 1e PHB, the first printing of course. Will the trap go off when they pry that gem free?

His art has incredibly strong textures going on. When I think of Wizards dueling I get the picture of "The Last Spell of Fistandantilus" in my head. His old cover for the 1e Waterdeep suppliment was great as well. Great beholder.

Larry Elmore:
He IS D&D art IMO, and his work on Dragonlance defines the world. His work on the D&D boxed sets define the genre to me...along with Otis's work of course.

Yep, that's the one! Thanks for posting that piece. I was going to scan it from the original module, but I didn't.

Where do you find images like that on-line? Is there a Web site that has a lot of them or do you just Google it?

Anyhow, that pic is great!
