There is something that's getting missed here - civilizations are not just divvied up geographically, but also chronologically. Renaissance Europe, Dark Ages Europe, and Europe of the year 10 AD are not at all the same. Same goes for most places on the planet - each locale has probably been host so several civilizations, all of them interesting.
