Naw, it was the nudity. WOTC changed the d20 license rules to forbid it (to prevent the Book of Erotic Fantasy being d20), which forced Mongoose to make it OGL . Supposedly that is why there were so many typos and mistakes (like refernces to Half-orcs) in parts of the book, because they were quickly copy and pasted into the manuscript from the SRD.
Well, the RPG did stir up a controversy that was IMHO, a non-issue. At the risk of flaming, WotC clammed up and "disneyfied" themselves so they don't get into another controversy after the devil/demon brouhaha with a few but very vocal church groups.

I don't mind a family-friendly RPG, but RPG should not be limited to that audience.

Indeed, but it was The Book of Erotic Fantasy that caused the big stir IIRC. I don't remember nearly as much of a blow up over Conan. Truth be told, Conan is made to be contraversial as you have racism, violence, and nude slave women.

I'm being an idiot. Conan has character creation rules doesn't it? That's why they went OGL as its not allowed with the d20 logo.

You have it backwards. Conan was going to be a d20 book, but when WOTC added the nudity clause to the d20 license (which they did for the Book of Erotic Fantasy, which wasn't so much the nudity, but the complete tackiness of that product), Mongoose had to go OGL anyway, so they added character creation and all that. And this is supposedly why so many errors and such made it onto the first printing, because they had to copy and paste stuff into the book to make it stand alone, that probaboy would have otherwise been in it. And thus some stuff wasn't fully Conan-ized. Like references to Half-orcs.

At least, that's what I could have sworn I read as an excuse for the shoddy editing of the original Conan RPG

I'm not disagreeing, but that would have been a curious choice especially considering conversations I've had with them at the various cons. I'm honestly not sure. If memory serves, the only nudity in Conan in in the border art, isn't it?

It isn't a "nudity clause." It's a broad content approval clause with the understanding that anything outside the bounds of typical YA genre fantasy and American social mores ("community standards") might not make the cut. So heavily clothed responsible people smoking dope is probably right out as well.

Erotic Fantasy Roleplaying is tacky? :\

I dunno, dude, before the above product became a reality, I've had discussions with others about the possibility of adult-themed RPG using the SRD and having the d20 logo. Ryan Dancey mentioned that the d20 logo is much like the JVC's DVD logo.

It's WotC who got cold feet, probably the same with Sony and their Blu-Ray logo and their high-def DVD format. Or is it our fan community. Never thought they'd be that puritannical.
