Confessions of a 4e DM- I said no

Shabe

First Post
Hi my name is Shabe, and I said No (insert gasps of horror).

Maybe I was ratty because I was tired, maybe I thought my players were taking the piss, maybe it was because they asked if they could tie sunrods to their armour so that they could have light sources without having their hands full.

For someone reason I just said no, surely the wizard gets a light spell for a reason.

So have any other DM's said No to their players?

(Sunrods have a light range of 20 squares!!! 20 squares for gads sake mutter mutter grumble)

You know, that's actually one I would have said 'yes' to, and I'm a horribly backward 3.5e DM! Of course, affixing light sources like that to centre mass in darkened caverns would make the characters easier to see to hit, and so operate as a sort of anti-cover for the benefit of enemies...

Sure, plenty of times. While I understand where the 4e DMG is coming from with its "say yes" philosophy, I don't agree that it's always the best policy. "Yes", "no" and "yes, but..." all have their places.

Yes I said no... When my players asked if they could buy some sunrods..

Many people, probably including myself, would have been with you on this one! The mistake is letting sunrods into the game in the first place. Although, as pointed out, really bright light sources make you a BIG target. There's a reason the SAS don't cruise around at night with 10 million candle power torches you know.

Oh sure... but it's been a long time since I've said 'No' to a request that trivial. My advice to you; make it a long time before you do it again.

Really, it wasn't as if the dwarven fighter was trying to carry 25 throwing axes --all readily accessible, mind you-- on his person (note: inspired by a true story) :).

I think that the range of sunrod is a bit too much 5 squares with 5 dim would be enough, then I could stick em on my arms or shield and you wouldn't complain and that would give them an advantage enough over torches and lanterns :p

Try retconning them tonight ;)
