Reporting back!
So I had a new Player join up who played in a bad DnD game a few weeks ago but thought he would give the game another shot. My other 3 players are: My Fiancee who has never played and frankly was complaining about not wanting to play the whole week, a friend who played in the same bad campaign as the new guy, and a guy who played once about 10 years ago.
Here is how it went, we met up about mid day (lunch time), I bought a ton of drinks for everyone and some snacks. We all built characters and I answered any questions people had about DnD before starting. We started with the red box campaign in the dungeon and right into the first fight.
At first things went a little bumpy for the first few rounds until people got used to things but after they did, they were really getting into it. By the end of the first encounter people were laughing, I was Role Playing the attacks, ex "The drake lunges forward clinging his teeth to your armor. The scraping noise of his large fangs along your plate chestplate sends a screech up your spine." Stuff like that and people were loving it, it really helped emerge people.
We went and did the first 3 ecounters in the redbox compaign and it took about 7 hours
Afterwards we all went out to dinner together and we had a blast. The entire time people were talking about the DnD game and offering suggestions and just talking about how much they loved it. My fiancee who was complaining the entire week prior was now asking, "When are we meeting again?"
Most players were getting into the Role Playing also. They started stating what they did, even if they missed or crit. One player rolled a 1 on an attack and said that when he raised his axe high in the air it got stuck in the wall behind him and was stuck for the round. People really enjoyed it.
Saying all that, there was some bad...
People really didn't get the hang of using thier skills to explore the room or use the environment to their advantage. I told them after each enoucnter some of the things they could have done with the stuff around them to help and they started to get the hang of it and I think they will use it more in the future. They didn't do a lot of checks, for example, there are a lot of magic symbols in the dungeon and I had to keep reminding them, hey you can use arcana here I think.
The rouge tricked me into beliving he had combat advantage almost every round... Ill have to sit him aside and explain to him that he doesnt and show him the rules on combat advantage. I know he didn't have it but I didn't want to stop the campaign to show him why because of the other players.
I think that was all the bad I can think of....
Ohh, there was one really cool event during encounter 2, for thoes who know the campaign, there is a dragon that they talked down but there is also 8 minions who they trapped in a room and were killing one at a time but while they were doing that I had 5 of the minions sneak all the way around the dungeon and flank them! They were really shocked and really enjoyed the monster tactics because I hid the tiles from them, I mean logically if the monsters are in another room they shouldn't be able to see the tiles
Anyway, thanks everyone for the help and just letting you know that things went great! Got to talk to that rouge though, he was doing 24+ damage everytime he hit in every combat.... Knew that wasn't right.
