core problem: duelist

Yupp. Duelist is a great class for a monk. LOL. Haha.

And you can go TWF with a duelist, all you need to do is to use IUS. Stunning fist fits my view of a bar brawling dude with rapier pretty nicely.

All a duelist needs are good attributes and at least 2 levels of monk. High Wis, Int and Dex and your AC is fine even without Mage armor or some silly spells from a silly book (SC).

In my original 3e campaign one PC had a lot of fun with a monk/ftr/duellist

:) ... yeah, noticed that he's better off in Light armor for most of his career. That's just sad. But giving him full Int to AC at 1st level would make Duelist dipping exceptionally attractive to Wizards, who would then continue to avoid melee like the plague.

Honestly, the whole class could be a couple of feats, possibly [Tactical] feats, but possibly just regular ones.

PS: IMC, "Precise Strike" is a feat which grants you +1d6 damage when you crit with a Finessed weapon. You can take it three times; the effects stack.
If a Wizard12 (need to be that high to have +6 BAB) wants to spend three of her five or six precious non-bonus feats to qualify for Duelist and *then* take a level that doesn't give casting, I think she deserves the full +Int to AC. Athena knows, it's much harder than just taking 1 level in Battledancer for a Sorcerer and gaining +Cha to AC without level limit.

Heh, good point. Maybe that's the answer. Make it a reasonably good dip class, and then make it strong enough to stand on its own for non-casters.

I don't like it as an answer, but maybe that's the right thing to do here. (Just like Swashbuckler and his uncapped Int to damage.)

I'd like to point out that their main attack abilities amounts to "bane versus everything that isn't immune to critical hits, with any sharp pointy weapon I wield." It's hard not to like that.

You forgot "As long as it is a wimpy finessable one-handed pointy weapon and I gimp myself by not using the other hand for anything, be it shield or second weapon." Trust me, I'd much rather just get the TWF chain (which I could have easily taken with bonus feats if those 10 levels were in Fighter) than having +2d6 with the restrictions the Duelist has.
