Costs of upgrading

Hey all.

What do you all think will be the costs of upgrading to 4th:

1) How much do you think the new books will run for?
2) Do you plan on upgrading?
3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?
4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade?
5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books?

Personally, I don't think I'll upgrade, I don't think it'll be cost effective,. I've put way to much effort into my campaign, and to convert it over will probably be more trouble then its worth (esp. since I"ve heard that converting to 4th from 3.5 will be difficult). I'll probably buy the core books, just so if I go to any cons, I'll have the books to play.

Probably, the core books will go for $30 each (I'm hoping for, but not counting on them being $20 a piece, like the 3rd ed books were)... So, the primary upgrade will cost $90, and that'll bespread over 3 months. So that's not terrible at all.

I will buy at least the 3 core books, and will see how I like them before deciding whether or not to switch the campaign(s) that I'm currently running (or will run). I probably won't switch for around a year or so, giving my players plenty of time to get the new books, or whatever.

I'll totally keep my 3.5 books (like I did my 3rd ed books and my 2nd ed books before those, and so on...).

Any amount of money that I spend on RPGing at all is bonus money, so it doesn't really matter if I get, "the best value for my dollar" or whatever. I'm sure that the new edition of the game will be well worth the time and money spent, however.

Other than some (more) of the 3.5 books finding their way to discount places like Half Price Books, I don't think that there will be much in the way of discounting... The books are in no way worth any less than they were... say... a year ago. Although, I suppose that some places might do inventory clearing sales...

1) How much do you think the new books will run for?
No idea. My guess is $30-40
2) Do you plan on upgrading?
Not sure, but odds are in favor of it.
3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?
How much I spent on 3.5 isn't a factor. What matters to me is how good it is and if I have people to play it with (Mac based, so no D&D Insider online play for me, at least to start).
4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade?
They will probably end up alongside my Basic and Expert Sets, AD&D, AD&D 2nd edition and 3rd edition books.
5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books?
Discount? Other than what somebody like Amazon offers? Not sure what you mean here.

1) I'm guessing $30 a pop. More than that would seem like gouging and annoy me.
2) If I like what I see, yes. I don't like 3E so we'll see. I may even get the Shadowfell thingy and/or some minis if I decide to take the plunge.
3) If I like it then it will be worth it. I never spent that much on 3.5.
4) For 3.5 I have the core and UA plus Lords of Madness and some Eberron stuff. I'll keep LoM and the Eberron stuff for the fluff value. 3.5 core will stay where it is now: boxed up (I kind of like having the core books for every edition of D&D).
5) I'm not sure what you mean. I do expect that most game stores (though not all; I can think of one in particular) will have blowout sales to move the old books as the time draws nigh.

I'll go out on a limb here and say the core books will go for $40 each, with all following material going for $50 a pop.

I'm guessing $30 will be the price of the core books. As for the price of supplements, I think their prices will vary depending on page count.

My guess would be $40 each. I don't think that's unreasonable.

2) Do you plan on upgrading?

Not sure. When the announcement was first made, the answer was a definate "yes". Unfortunately, I've since learned of one specific (and fairly minor) change that puts that in serious doubt. (Don't ask - this isn't the place to discuss it.)

3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?

Absolutely. I expect the vast majority of gamers to upgrade, which means that to find a new group you will be well-served to be familiar with the new rules. Given the amount of use I've gotten out of my 3.5e core rules, it's a no-brainer.

4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade?

Keep them. The system might suck.

5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books?

Officially, from WotC? $0.

From game stores, Amazon, eBay? This will depend heavily, but I suspect it will be quite considerable, as they try to shift out the old stock.

What do you all think will be the costs of upgrading to 4th:

1) How much do you think the new books will run for?
I think they'll retail at about $30 a piece.

2) Do you plan on upgrading?
Nope.

3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?Depends, if youre a player who has a few splat books, sure. If youre a DM who has shelves of 3.5 material as well as PDF's, hell no.

4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade?
I'm not upgrading so I guess I'm keeping my 3.5 books. If in a year or two I can't find players, I'll donate my books to a local library.

5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books?
None.

I've got enough 3.5 material to last me until the 4e books drop to £15. Might buy the PHB as soon as it is released though, and subscribe to D&D Insider (I hope its the same price as it is in the US ($10), and they don't up it to £10 a month. That would suck.)

Books now are $34.99 - $39.99 ... I don't expect the core books to be less than $34.99 a piece.

Absolutely not.

Not at all. I've spend far too much money on these books to ever really warrant changing editions.

Why would WoTC offer any discounts?
