CR 12 lvl 10 wizard/ vampire?

Tidus4444

First Post
Our group is in a jam right now. We're having to face a lvl 10 wizard/vamp at 6th level. Last time we were able to reduce his hp to pretty lowand then he teleported. Anyway, now we have his maidens and he's not too happy about this. We're in the middle o the wilderness. It's likely he will attack next night, though I don't know what we can do to prepare if he does. It's possible we can get to a town first. Anyway, here is our party:

5 Fighter/ 1 Ootbi Elf
W/ Bracers o Archery and a +1 Mighty composite longbow this guy can rain death upon his foes.

6 Barbarian Half-Orc
With his huge greataxe doing an average fo 18 per hit, this guy can deal a heckuva lot of damage.

6 Bard Dwarf
A newbie player who can't do much. She can sing pretty well (inspire courage helps a lot), and her best spell is invisibliity.

6 Sorcerer Halfling
Best spells are Levitate, Magic Missile, and Flaming Sphere. We still haven't leveled up yet (even though the vamp got away, our DM gave us lots o xp for nearly vanquishing the vamp), but I'd bet he takes fireball as his 3rd level spell

Major magic items we have:
Bracers of Archery
+1 Silver Greataxe
+1 Chainmail
+1 Composite Mighty (14) longbow
scroll of lvl 9 fireball

If we do make it town I'm a gonna buy these things:
Anything that will resist lightning: Call Lightning hurts. It nearly killed me.
Several Scrolls of Daylight: Vamps hates daylight
Several scrolls of see invis: the vamp went invisible on us!

Here's how the battle went down as best as I know: the vamp shows up, hold person's the barb. Next round, call Lightning's me. Next round: cloudkill. We all made our saving throws though. Lucky. After that, he call lighting's me again. I fail my saving throw, and am down to -6 hp. Then he teleports away. Keep in mind he was inivisible the ENTIRE TIME!
Please help.

Scrolls of Protection from Evil and Dispel Magic come to mind. Protection from Evil can really help. Also, if you can find anything or anyone to cast Restoration, that may come in quite useful.

if he is calling lightening he has something other than wizard levels , he is a druid too. Maybe you mean lightening bolt? anyway, I hate to be a spoilsport but if the vampire wants you dead, if he is played correctly PCs of your level only have about a 1% chance of ever defeating him. I would tell you to run until you gain 2-3 levels then whip his butt.

Hm.

A healer-poor EL 6 party against an EL 12 encounter.

Dude, you have plenty to fear.

The bard can cast her healing spells on the vampire. The save is WILL based, so the vamp will probably make it, but cure moderate wounds will do 2d8+6 against the critter.

Use that freaking fireball scroll A.S.A.P. What are you saving it for?

Your job as the archer is to hold action until the vampire starts to cast a spell, then unleash your arrows on him. Try to disrupt spellcasting. That is really your group's only hope. Read up on holding actions and the like in the combat section of the book.

The vampire probably has, what? 10d12 hit points? So you're looking at having to do ~60 points of damage in one round.

Good luck.

Any chance of getting in touch with a competent cleric? That would help a lot. Invisibility to undead might work, even though he gets a saving throw. Protection from elements might also be a good idea, if the vampire uses lightning, for example.

Seems to me that you're screwed, big time. EL of +6 to your average level is almost guaranteed TPK.

It might just be me, but the BBEG seems a bit overpowered compared to your group. I mean he is EL 12, 6 CR over your group. You should be dead!! Your party has less than 5% chance of surviving such an encounter.

Your equipment is decent, and fits nicely with your level and composition IMO. But you are just not in the same league as him.

I would look for clues your DM might have placed, in order for your group to survive. If he hasn't made any special conditions or plot twists which will help you out, I would consider it poor DM'ing or at the very least, a bad call, on his part.

My advice: avoid him at all costs!! ...at least until level 8-9. Should you all die, it will not be due to bad tactical decisions on your part, it would be entirely the DM's fault.

But since I don't know your DM, he might have something planned, so don't go and yell at him right away.

Avoiding really isn't an option. Also, I think that this guy has far less HP than a normal one. I peeked over to the DM's thing and he only had like 100 hp. So I think we might have a chance. I'm sure we would have been able to drop him if he hadn't been invised. Oh, and we used one of the scrolls of Fireball last time. We got 2 of em. And yeah, I know we might be looking at a TPK here. But the DM seems to be holding back a bit. Like I said, the only spells he used were Lghtining Bolt, Cloudkill, Dominate Person, and Hold Person. Of those, only Cloudkill is above lvl3, which is about th challenge I'd expcet. Good ideao n the protect from evil.

EDIT: Remember what I said about the Bard being a newbie? Yeah, she didn't take any cures. 0.0/ We got about 125 charges left off of several wands of cure light wounds though.

EDIT2: MMkay, I've thought of 2 plans.
Plan 1: conservative approach
Buy scroll of Daylight and Scroll of Glitterdust/ Dispel Magic. Cast daylight and dispel/glitterdust the vampire's invisibility. I'm not sure what exactly daylight does to a vampire, but on the demi-vampires we fought earlier it made them far weaker and got rid of DR and Fast Healing, and the DM said it has an even worse effect on a real one. After that just wail on him and pray he doesn't teleport away.

Plan 2: Fireball approach
Give scroll of Fireball to Bard (DM says Arcane casters can use any arcane scroll/wand. Which actually lead to our Sorc havign a wand of cure light wounds). Buy 2 Necklaces of Fireballs. Me and the Barb activate the highest level of Fireball on our Necklaces, Bard uses Scroll of Fireball, Sorc casts fireball manually. If I'm correct in thinking that the lowest Necklace of Fireballs has a 7d6 one, that's 29d6 of damage in one round. We've got a good chance of one rounding him.

Oh, and we nearly killed him last time at lvl 5. At lvl 6 our party's power goes up exponentially. Me and the barb get another attack and Sorc gets fireball.

Only 100 hp?!?! Thats just about 40 points above average!!!

Well, anyways, I'm not that fond of helping a party meta-game, so i'll just stop right now. Anyway, it seems like your DM might have altered the vampire a bit to suit his needs, which is just great!

Good luck and Happy Gaming!
P.S. You're gonna need it ;)

I'm not exactly sure what the lightning spell was... it was either chain lightning or call lightining. Since he's lvl 10 they both do the same amount of damage.
