cr and hardness HELP!

First Post
it seems to me the cr of animated objects should be adjusted upward depending on the hardness of the object, has anyone come up with a clean or quick way of figuring this?

intuition does ok, but i am looking for something more solid.

thanks.

I don't think the CR of animated objects takes into account what would happen if you animated an Adamantine door, or something similar. I think intuition is the best way to go if you want to animate more exotic and hard materials.

Just remember though, I wouldn't go changing the CR just by changing the hardness from 5 to 10 if the animated object still had an attack bonus of only +2... that's not making it a much tougher foe... it'll just take the PCs a little longer to kill it.

The last time I used a Colossal Stone Animated Object ... not CR 10.

The entire party used Improved Invisibility (after two were nearly killed), and it took them forever to kill that thing, along with the loss of many direct damage spells.

I think their CR is a bit off to start with, so there's no hard formula for determining a CR boost for a hardness boost.

wow, i really thought someone would be all over this one, the hardness difference between a rug, a table and a marble statue (all medium) seems drastically different.

murrdox is right to a point i think, but this is a huge range of different challenges imho.

3.5 might help

Animate Object is a spell, so it would make sense to change the Animated Object so that they had DR. It is almost pointless to try most direct damage to something with hardness.

35 (10d6 average)/ 2 (hardness factor for fire) =17.
17 - 8 (hardness of stone) = 9.

9 damage from a 3rd level spell isn't worth your time. Some spells do much better, like any sonic damage spell.

Also, an exotic material (such as Adimantine) gives more protection than a Balor in 3.5 (DR 15/holysilver). Animated Objects at the high end of the scale should get toned down to match.
