craft wand or craft wonderous item?

First Post
I'm playing a 4th level wizard and am currently looking ahead to 5th level and my first bonus feat. I've already decided it's going to be either craft wand or craft wonderous item.. I just can't decide wich, I will pick up the other feat however, it won't be until around 15th level or so.

In my current group there are only 2 players the wizard (me) and a monk.

the benefits of 50 shots of my favorite spells with no AoO is tempting, and frees up a few spell memorization slots
on the other hand the sheer versatility and number of amazingly usefull items i could make with craft wonderous item... heck boots of speed and a cloak of displacement already have me drooling..

any ideas?

I like wand, but it tops out at 4th level spells. Craft Wonderous never dies (until Epic). So, long-term, the choice is obvious. But two characters really changes the dynamic. Since I would guess few people play that way (although we did play with 3 for almost a year), you are probably the best one to judge.

It would seem that you have plans for your regular feats, otherwise I'd suggest you pick up both.

Wondrous Item, especially if your DM allows you to get creative and not have to create just the items listed in the DMG.

I personally would say wand since it has much more uses during the lower levels then wondrous items

I would disagree. Craft Wonderous Item allows the creation of many of the bread and butter items of a wizard's accourement.

You can make a Headband of Intellect, Cloak of Resistance and Bracers of Armor right off the bat, and improve any of those items you alrady have, all at half cost. Boccob's Blessed Book is another highly desirable item craftable with the Craft Wondreous Item feat.

If you can find a source to cast Barkskin for you, you can make a Amulet of Natural Armor. Failing that, a Periapt of Wisdom or one of the other amulets are great choices. A Belt of Endurance will give you extra hit points. Gloves of Dexterity will give you higher AC and make your ranged attack rolls better. Craft Wonderous Item has such a wide array of uses it should be on the short list of possible feats for almost any wizard.

And this doesn't even begin to get into items you craft for your companions. Offer to make items for them now and then for a discount of some sort and you can turn a profit (to fund your own Crafting efforts) and your fighters will be stronger, your rogues more charismatic, and your clerics wiser.

Craft Wonderous Items.

Here are my reasons:
  1. Wands are cheaper to buy and fairly common. If you have to buy all your wands yet can make all your wonderous items, it probably costs less than the other way around.
  2. Wands are only useable by spellcasters. With Craft Wonderous Items, you can make items that other people (such as your companion) can use.
  3. If you are short on cash, selling wonderous items should get you more cash quickly than wands.
    [/list=1]

This assumes that you have some of the spells you would need to create the wonderous items. If you don't have the spells needed, then the feat isn't nearly as useful.

Depends on how much money you have available. If you don't have much, wand is better because you probably can't afford to spend half the cost of most wondrous items anyway. If you have plenty of money, wondrous is better, because you can just buy wands, and get twice as much out of your money for wondrous items.

Right. If your DM arbitrarily allows this, no one ever needs any feat other than Craft Wondrous Item.
