Craft Wondrous Items Question...

MorganKiller

First Post
We have a 3.0 Evoker who wants to craft bracers of armor, but Conjuration is his forbidden school so he cannot cast Mage Armor. Is there any way to work around this limitation (i.e. clerical spells...)?

he could research a similar spell belonging to a different school, but it would be quite expensive since he's 5th level...

By the rules, not only can he not cast mage armour, he cannot even wear a pair of bracers of armour. This was discovered to the rue of the Transmuter in my 3.0 RttToEE campaign.

WOW, must be a killer DM.

But not by the rules.

To answer the origional question, the easiest way to make the bracers is to somehow castthe spell. It muyst be availalbe to cast, but the maker of the item does not need to cast it. So he could hire Joe-blow apprentice mage to cast the spell form a scroll or something.

Or even find a cleric with the right domain.

It is just a little tricky, but not too hard to get around.

Anyone can wear a pair of bracers of armour... He cannot use spell completion magic items such as wands of mage armour or potions... but he can use wondrous items which were crafted with the spell.

Potions aren't spell completion items, otherwise how could a fighter ever use one? It's not that specialists can't use those spells, it's simply that they're effectively not on their spell list. So for the evoker to cast mage armor would as difficult as casting cure light wounds. However, it has been brought up that hiring a first level mage is fairly cheap :)

Also, whatever DM said the evoker can't even wear bracers of armor is an @$$ and the player should complain immediately.

You would be correct in your observation sir! That DM is me! :D

I'm here at work so I can't check that up right now, and it would seem as though it was a misreading on my part. I have no problems revoking that "rule". Perhaps I'm merely misremebering telling him he couldn't create a pair...
