Crafting a MWK Warhammer in one day

The target DC is 15 for a normal item. Master Work has a craft DC of 20, according to the SRD.

By the book, you actually start by crafting a Warhammer, like any other. Then you craft the master work component as if it were a separate item.

Look under the Craft skill description.

As a solution to your challenge, in our campaign we tried to un-break Fabricate a bit by changing the way it works: Instead of simply providing all the labor instantly, it allows a craftsperson and a number of helpers (1 per 3 caster levels) to craft faster, doing a week's worth of work in a single day. The caster has to be included in the group, either as the master craftsperson or as a helper.

This allows the spell to account for things like master worked artisan's tools, Aid Another and other circumstance bonuses (and penalties) that may apply. It also keeps the guilds from going on strike whenever there's a high level caster in town. :)

But this version of Fabricate may help you address the issue. At that point you're producing results measured in silver pieces instead of coppers, and your required skill checks drop sharply. A target DC of 60, with a skill check to match, would produce 3600 SP in progress, which translates to 360 GP.

With or without this, consider circumstance bonuses such as "Crafted during the Summer Solstice", which means a long, long work day. Go far enough north (beyond the Arctic Circle) and you can get several months of direct sunlight on your project, and thus make the project possible with sane, unenhanced skill modifiers.

As already noted, casting Fabricate will allow a dwarf to create a MWK item instantly, provided he can beat DC 20 with his Craft Weapon skill check.

Also, with Wish spell you can immediately make or upgrade a magic item, provided you can spend enough XPs. So, if the clan has multiple magi who can cast Wish, and those magi had enough XPs to spend in the right time, they can create a powerful magical warhammer in a short time.

This is something I'd like my players to think for themselves, love the idea! They should get a Ring of Substenance or something similar to work for more than 8 hours a day though.

Go far enough north (beyond the Arctic Circle) and you can get several months of direct sunlight on your project, and thus make the project possible with sane, unenhanced skill modifiers.

Having such a long day anywhere on the world would ruin the prophecy though. But great thinking!

Also they can't use Fabricate due to several house-rullings for that spell. We had a discussion on another campaign with a dwarven weaponsmith pc and the fabricate spell so we limited it quite a lot.

Thank you very much guys!

rules for crafting state that an individual can craft for 8 hours out of a day.

Since you have a whole group of Dwarves, there is nothing saying that, by RAW, you can't have 3 crafters within a 24 hour period, three seperate 8 hour shifts, passing the hammer off to the next crafter and his (5?) assistants.

This should be the equivolent of 3 crafting "Days", since a crafting day is an 8 hour process. Do the math for 3 days worth of crafting and see if this simplifies the process.

Would this help? I got lost in the numbers a little while ago.

So the actual prophecy or whatever says that it must be forged while continuously receiving sunlight? Okay, go to the north pole during the summer.

I mean c'mon, you never take prophecies at face value. It's practically required that you twist the letter of the wording.

Or for added mythicness, the dwarves go on a quest to steal a piece of the sun and use it as their forge fire.

I was rereading up on Dwarven Forges in Races of Stone because someone mentioned them in another thread.

Forge of Sustenance states that someone using this forge does not need to eat, sleep or breathe, allowing for non-stop crafting time, instead of 8 hours a day. Crafting occurs at 3x the speed since you can go for the full 24 hours each day.

Edit: Sorry, even better- "Forge of the Weaponsmith: This magic forge grants a
dwarf who uses it a +20 competence bonus on Craft (weaponsmithing)
checks made using the forge."
