Creating a better two weapon fighter

Heh, at least you have bonus feats! ;) My sorceress does not enjoy this liberty.
Well, ok, now she does, being an incantatrix and all that... :D

If you get a decent amount of fixed damage (WS, IS, etc), keen scimitars will be pretty nasty, I guess. :)

Yeah, the dervish is pretty strong with a twohanded weapon for a class that was purposefully built for twin scimitar wielding drowlovas ;)

And the class never has enough feats for the TWF style :(

Don't worry too much about improved TWF, the secondary attacks are not that important at first.

Try to talk your DM into changing the weapon focus into one of the prerequisites for dervish.

Two-weapon fighting is all about the 'per-attack' bonuses.

Things like weapon specialisation, sneak attack, elemental enchantments all multiply by the number of attacks made, and the 2wf style's main strength is sheer numbers of attacks. Focus on these types of abilites and you will easily hold your own.

A particularly deadly use of 2wf is to use 2 shortswords of wounding - potentially doing a LOT of con drain in a full attack (not to mention the base damage, weapon spec, sneak attack etc.. :))

Here are my options:

Rogue 2/Fighter 4 (specialization)
Rogue 2/Fighter 2/Swashbuckler 2 (weapon finesse, 1 level to insightful strike)
... something else?

Did you rule out Rogue 4/Fighter 2 completely?

For damage, +2 from WSpec is probably going to be still more worth than the sneak attack +1d6, since not every attack is a sneak attack, but later on sneak attack would increase even more which is very nice when fighting with 2 weapons.

I thought of that later... while rogue 4 is nice, sneak attack damage doesn't multiply with crits... and with improved crit (eventually... way down the road... sigh) I'll want flat damage to multiply with. Plus, uncanny dodge is nice but not spectacular, and to get 3d6 sneak attack, you have to suck another 0 BAB level. Bleh.

I think eventually I'll be rogue 3 fighter 4 swashbuckler 3 dervish 10... though not really sure in what order.

BTW, DM was ok with switching to weapon focus: scimitar. Bitched a little bit, but let it go.

While I agree that a two handed weapon actually works rather well with dervish, I don't think my DM would be keen on me changing my character that much (i.e. swapping out weapon focus *and* two weapon fighting and two weapon defense).

If your DM bitches even more, you might make a compromise of kukris instead of shortswords. (and if he doesn't see a few invisible blade levels coming later :D)

Get the ftr4 levels asap. You need the feat and you need the reliable damage (as well as hitpoints). Dervish first level is important, then take care of the third swashbuckler level ... rogue levels: Wouldn't care if you don't need the skillpoints. That superdefense special of the dervish is more important.

Twohanded weapon: Don't forget that you can use a scimitar twohanded. Usually (if your DM allows you to). Quickdraw and drop the other one(s).

Problem is, the feat at fighter 4 is pretty much predestined to be specialization, which means it doesn't actually help out with all the two weapon fighting feats...

I see a big problem coming up... improved two weapon fighting requires 6 BAB, and I get 6 BAB at 7th level... I am sans feats until 9th.... at which point I'll want to take improved critical. Hmm... might have to get to fighter 4 and use the feat for improved two weapon fighting.... it's sucky, but what can you do?

<rant>Damn two weapon fighting.... why is it not just ONE feat!? Hell, it would be balanced with ZERO feats.</rant>

If there's one thing that balances TWF, it's the Dervish class (as long as you don't have dervishs with greatswords, greataxes and falchions).

Which are the prerequ feats for dervish again?

Weapon Focus: <slashing weapon>, Dodge, Mobility, Expertise, 3 ranks each Tumble and Perform: Dance, BAB +5. (Length of Dervish Dance is perform ranks/2 so max ranks is a good idea).

That's a lot of prereqs.

I like that Dervish has several cool abilities... I actually created my own PrC with the "may full attack while moving but must move at least 5' between attacks" mechanic before complete warrior came out, so when I saw Dervish, I knew I'd have to play it eventually.

I really wish Dervish gave two weapon fighting feats as bonus feats. Add two weapon fighting to the list of requirements, and give improved two weapon fighting at first level, greater at 6th, to make up for the fact that the class requires a very feat heavy chain, and doesn't give any way to get those feats.

Hrm... not a bad idea for a request to my DM...
