The XXX are a small fey race somehow related to gnomes, tending the plants of the forest. Generally peaceful, they do act if something threatens their habitat.
A/n XXX appears as a gnome with moss for hair and green or brown eyes.

Combat
XXXs usually leave combat to their plant allies, but if necessary, they join combat with either their strange greening poison or their sickles.
Poison (Ex): Poison touch, DC 12, primary 1d4 dex, secondary creature becomes greenish and grows leaves.
Spell-like Abilities: At will - diminish growth, obscuring mist and plant growth; 3/day - barkskin, entangle, goodberry, and spike growth. As a 5th level druid (DC: 13 plus spell level)
Summon Plants (Sp): Once per day, a/n XXX can summon a number of plant creatures, with a total HD of double the XXX's HD, with no creature having more than 1/3 the total in HD. These creatures remain for 1 hour, and cannot use their own summoning ability (if any) for 1 hour.
Gnome Traits: XXXs share a number of abilities with forest gnomes, as follows:
XXXs have the innate ability to pass without trace (as the spell).
+2 racial bonus to saving throws against illusions.
+4 dodge bonus against giants.
Speak with Nature (Ex): XXXs can freely talk to animals, plants and rocks, as the spells speak with animals, speak with plants and stone tell. In addition, this ability allows the XXX to use its Animal Empathy skills on plants with an Int score below 3 (including plants without an Int score).
Tree Stride (Su): Three times per day, a/n XXX can duplicate the effects of the tree stride spell as cast by a druid of 5th level.
Skills: XXXs receive a +4 racial bonus to Hide checks, *which improves to +8 in a wooded area. Also, XXXs receive a +2 racial bonus to Listen checks, for their keen hearing.

Over the day, I'll edit the skill ranks into actual modifiers.

Finishing touch 1: Removing "low-light vision" from the SQ line.

It's implied by the Fey type (from the SRD: Unless noted otherwise, fey have low-light vision).

It's implied by Gnome Traits.

Finishing touch 2: Organization. What about "Solitary, couple, or copse (3--12 plus 1--4 >something<)" ? The something is left to be defined. A plant creature, like Thornies (OGC from ToH) ?

Finishing touch 3: Alignment. I think Always Neutral Good may be better suited (closer to dryads, and to actual gnomes).

Finishing touch 4: Advancement. If it has 3 HD, it can't "advance" to 3 HD, so it should be 4-6 HD (Small).

Finishing touch 5: What about giving it some ranks in the Alchemy skill (that would benefit from Gnome traits as well as the synergy from Profession[Herbalist]).

Finally, about the Treasure entry, what about: "Standard (Potions only)" ?

Hmm... let's see:

Finishing Touch 1: I agree
Finish Touch 2: I nominate the Violet Fungus (MM1) as the something. :D
Finishing Touch 3: I disagree as the 'moss gnome' is more concerned with its forests wellbeing than the concepts of good and evil.
Finishing Touch 4: I suggest that the advancement is: By character class or 4-9 HD (small)
Finishing Touch 5: I disagree as it is a nature spirit, not something you would find in a lab.
Finishing Touch 6: Treasure should be standard.

Later, :D

My heart agrees, but my head does not. :p
The latest book releases that contain monsters always specifically mention vision traits, even if they are part of type or race traits. I guess that is because not everyone reads that boring introduction. :D

Okay, that makes sense. I'd say we either keep to the core rules, or just mention plant creatures. (I'm in favor of the latter)

Finishing touch 3: Alignment. I think Always Neutral Good may be better suited (closer to dryads, and to actual gnomes).
Finishing Touch 3: I disagree as the 'moss gnome' is more concerned with its forests wellbeing than the concepts of good and evil.
The alignment is neutral, and the creature was built with a neutral alignment in mind. Plus, I prefer my guardians of nature to be neutral in alignment. ;)
A point could bee made to have the Alignment be Usually neutral, as opposed to always, though. How does that sound?

Finishing touch 4: Advancement. If it has 3 HD, it can't "advance" to 3 HD, so it should be 4-6 HD (Small).
Finishing Touch 4: I suggest that the advancement is: By character class or 4-9 HD (small)
OK, somewhere in my mind I must still have had a 2HD creature in mind. :o Since creatures can usually triple their HDs by advancing, it makes sense to make the limit 9 HD. I'd prefer to only list one advancement method, as an intelligent creature can always advance by class levels. So, should it be able to advance by HD?

Finishing touch 5: What about giving it some ranks in the Alchemy skill (that would benefit from Gnome traits as well as the synergy from Profession[Herbalist]).
Finishing Touch 5: I disagree as it is a nature spirit, not something you would find in a lab.
For what it is worth, I think that Profession (herbalist) already covers the things this fey should be able to create.

Finally, about the Treasure entry, what about : "Standard (Potions only)" ?
Finishing Touch 6: Treasure should be standard.
Why potions? Standard is ok, though.

Advancement (4-9HD) looks good to me. I'm late here, but I'd also suggest keeping the Barkskin and no nat AC bonus. I like pretty much everything that's been done here so far :)

Usually neutral alignment should be fine.

Sniktch: Welcome, a Wolverine fan I guess :D
