Crits on Bloodbath

Hi guys, just a quick question about how crit damage works on Bloodbath. It's wonky since it has automatic 1W+Dexterity in the Effect line as well as 1W+Dex on a Hit. If you rolled a critical hit, would the Hit damage and the Effect damage be maxed out or would you still roll separately for the Effect damage? Thanks.

The effect: damage doesn't have an associated attack roll, hence it cannot crit.

It's the same as if it were a seperate attack - you wouldn't assume the second attack was a crit just because the first one was, would you?

And it's not like you're really missing out: after all, your crit has maxed out that neat ongoing damage from sneak attack!

Hey Saeviomagy, you're right that the vast majority of the damage comes from maxing Sneak Attack and the associated ongoing.

So you're saying I'd max out my 1W (4 on a dagger), then the regular Dex/feat/enhancement damage, then the additional 16 from Sneak Attack (with the Backstabber feat of course). However, on the Effect line, I would roll damage as normal.

I suppose that makes sense, and since my weapon die is a d4 it barely matters. Thanks.

I would actually say to maximize the effect damage as well. It may only be adding on 1-5 damage, but in my book, anything that makes the hero more heroic is more fun, and as a plus it speeds up combat. It's only 1-5 damage, it's not going to ruin any DM master plans.

Read as written, though, Saeviomagy is probably right.

I mean, I'm sure I could do whatever and the DM wouldn't notice, and if he did notice, he probably wouldn't care. As far as I can tell though, it would only add 1-3 damage, since I'm guaranteed to roll at least a 1 and can't roll higher than a 4.

I might max it out just for the sake of speeding up the calculation.

I think technically the effect's damage would not be maximized on a crit.

Btw:
Step 1 - use Knockout (successfully), but don't use your sneak attack.
Step 2 - action point to coup de grace with Bloodbath.
Step 3 - enjoy your maximized sneak attack damage/ongoing!

I think technically it's probably right NOT to maximize the effect damage, but because the difference ultimately comes down to whether I give myself a 4 for dagger damage or 1-4, and no one likes to wait around while someone is calculating crit damage, it might be worth it to just squeak this one by. If anyone complained it would be no big deal to change.

As for the Knockout/Bloodbath combo, this has been in my dreams, and our party just hit level 9, so I'm very excited. The first time I used Knockout I critically hit a dragon we were fighting in a high altitude aerial battle. Rather than burn the AP I figured I'd see how the fall treated him.
