Curse of House Thimbrall (orsal judging)

Jann is unsure of how much of a danger this foe presents. With everyone crowding through the door, he elects to wait and see what this humanoid does before responding.

OOC: Jann delays until after the adversary

Ao'thuir opens the door to reveal a bedroom, 20'x40'. A large bed sticks out from the west wall; a middle-aged human is crounching behind the bed.
"At last, a use for my powers", Boog thought to himself. He started across the large room at the top of the stairs, and stopped when he was a little over twenty feet from the crouching man. Those standing near him heard a soft chime that seemed to come from inside their heads as he attempted to use his powers on the man. But aside from that sound that was completely inaudible otherwise, there was no indication that Boog was doing anything other than merely looking at the man. His hand crept to his dagger inside his cloak, yet he made no display of the weapon.

OOC:[sblock]Move to within 25 feet of the crouching man, then use Psionic Charm on him. 1 PP used, 3 PP left. I think a single move action should get Boog from the head of the stairs to a suitable location to manifest the power.

Also, just in summary, to see if I have this right, Boog's staff should be near the head of the stairs, lying on the floor. His crossbow should be loaded, and there should be a spent crossbow bolt somewhere in the room (standard odds to salvage if he has the time to look for it later). And I believe that one zombie should be a completely dead crumpled heap, with three undead zombies cowering in various corners of the room. Have I got all that right?[/sblock]

Ridik follows the group into the room. As he spots the man behind the bed, he raise his crossbow, but hesitate. "Is it on of th fleeing zombie? Don't look like that. I thought everyone had left this place."

Kamdar moves to where he can see the crouching man better and gets ready to act as soon as he does. "Who are you?"

ooc: Checking to make sure this guy is a) really human and 2) not actually undead. If either of these is false, I ready an action to trip him as soon as he stops crouching. Do you want use to keep using invisiblecastle or do you prefer rolling yourself? I think most of us are probably indifferent. I have a +2 to the touch attack to trip and -3 to the opposed strength check--for your reference and mine.

First, the housekeeping details:

The battle with the latest round of zombies was in the foyer; any remains of that battle are going to be found there. You're now crowding into the room behind the NW door, where ao'Thuir saw the human. Animus wasn't clear about which direction the three surviving zombies fled in, but it wasn't into this room. (Note that there were four doors from the foyer. Let's say Z4 fled to the SW corner, and Z3 and Z1 to the NE.)

It'd be easiest if you do attack rolls and most skill checks on Invisible Castle. Initiatives and Spot/Listen checks, where everyone needs a roll, I'll do myself. It's simpler for me to use a spreadsheet with your modifiers and to make a single post rather than having everyone post individually.

Also, to the best anyone can tell, the stranger is in fact human and not undead.

Now, the results:

Keth (22 -- NPC) delays, waiting to see how others are handling this encounter.
Boog (18) uses his psionic charm. There's no evidence of a change in the stranger's demeanor or attitude. (Successful Will save.)
Jann (16) delays.
Kamdar (14) asks "Who are you?".
Ridik (14) delays.
Levin (8 -- NPC) delays.

The stranger (7) replies to Kamdar, "My name is Gerald. I might ask the same of you. Who are you, and why are you here?" He stands up, but does not make any obviously threatening actions (like drawing a weapon).

Jann:[sblock]You sense that he is trying to appear more confident that he his. He seems to be scared of you.[/sblock]

Anyone who delayed can move now. Also, Erekose13, do you wish to change ao'Thuir's intended charge?

Jann nods affably at Gerald, trying to put him at ease. "We don't want to hurt you. But we must know, how did you come to be inside this house, infested as it is with living corpses? Surely you aren't here on a dare, or something foolish like that. So, I ask you, why?" Jann attempts to be as friendly and charming as he can, but the stresses of the past day have worn his charm to the breaking point, and he comes across as rather more forceful than he intended.

[sblock=ooc: ]Diplomacy check rolled a freakin 1! for a total of 6. Not very smooth, there, Jann. He also readies an action to fire his heavy x-bow at Gerald, should he undertake any action that threatens any party member.[/sblock]

"I'm glad you asked!" Kamdar clears his throat to prepare for a story. "A gentleman, a Thimbrall, walked into a tavern not too far away from here, seeing aid. He had been struck with a disease--a horrible one--and he needed help. Some wizard, with forlorn love, put a curse on his family to turn them into zombies! This curse could only be broken by a special trinket that lay inside this very dreaded building, and we are the brave adventurers who decided to try our best to help this poor fellow. The people of the Thimbrall family are said to not be able to enter this buildin--" Kamdar cuts off, suddenly realizing something.

"There's no way you can be of the Thimbrall family. Why am I explaining all of this too?" He looks at his friends, "Well, I do like stories... So, Gerald, why are you here?"

ao'Thuir seeing his companions enter the room and begin talking to the human, holds off on his charge. He keeps his greatsword held high and ready to attack as he did not trust anything that could live with undead in peace.

Boog lowered his crossbow, concentrating on Gerald. He decided that he would use his powers to discern the truth of the man's words, should he start answering the band's many questions.

OOC:[sblock]If Gerald starts explaining himself, Boog will expend his Psionic Focus to use his Inquisitor feat, which would allow him to Sense Motive against a Bluff by Gerald at +16 (+6 natural, +10 for the feat).[/sblock]

Gerald pauses. "Thimbrall... ah, I have heard the story of that family. No, I am not of that family. I believe it is a long time since this has been their residence. I am here because my master bid me look after it. And you... I think I know the trinket you are looking for. It is in the opposite room." (he points toward the east) "Shall I show you?"

Boog: [sblock]He's lying about the amulet. Very poker-faced (bluff check 19), but your remarkable powers (sense motive check 33) see through him. He's probably just trying to get you out of that room.[/sblock]
