[D&D 3.5/Eberron] A Quick One While He's Away

OOC for Krug: I don't know, MadMaxim will have to tell you. After the wand of cure light and the cost of the sailing (initial offer at 1500 gp, reduced to 1000 gp by the half-elf lady, contract has it listed at 500 gp — 33% of the initial price), the party might have enough for a fully charged wand at caster level 1.

"Well I hope you didn't blow all your gold on that wand Max, because I'd like to use it for a wand that would make me more useful in combat, rather than shooting bolts into yers, even though the shifter does need one" nods Plonk. His hands casually cradle Flawed's shins, for some reason.

"I guess we are ready then." the warforged comments as Gannon signs the contract. "I do not think I need more supplies, so I will wait at the docks." It does not even look as it gently pushes aside whatever small creature touches it shins.

OOC for Krug: Quick calculations, based on what I've posted above (40% of list for the +1 sword is 800, 750 gp for the wand of cure light wounds) and a look at Gannon's character sheet, lead me to believe that it's not going to be possible (the party just doesn't have 750 gp to spare after travel expenses).

OOC: Pushing along (decent lodgings for the night cost 2 sp each, so 1 gp for the party)...

The next morning finds your group at the docks. The day is slightly overcast, and the air here is heavy with salt. Small boats moored in the harbor point hang to the east of their moorings — a west wind, typical for this time of year — and sit quietly in the calm water. As long as things stay this way, you should have a smooth crossing.

You spy Lyrandar flags at the end of one dock, and, down the pier, you spot a beautiful schooner with a beautiful blue hull and fine wooden decks — The Unexpected. Crew members load cargo from the docks onto the boat via two gangplanks — a small one forward and a larger one aft. At the end of the smaller, a shirtless half-elf, covered in tattoos, stands guard, a large sabre at his side. "Oyyer. Wot do you lot want?"

[Spellcraft check for Plonk, roll of 4 on d20, +7 skilled, total 11]

Flawed:
You recognize that one of the half-elf's tattoos isn't quite right — it's a least dragonmark of storms, allowing its bearer to manipulate the weather.

Gannon approaches the half-elf. "Good day to you, sir. As Plonk just mentioned, we've been hired by Jorune d'Lyrandar to work as guards on your ship. I believe he has given you our contract?" Then he looks at The Unexpected...

I wonder whether this vessel used to serve as a pirate ship? After all, who would give a merchant ship that kind of name...?

OOC: Okay, sorry about that, Krug. I thought we could afford it. I've sold the longsword and added the gold to my character sheet. I guess we'll just have to dig something up in Xen'drik...

"My ship? Wot in blazes gives yer that idea!" He laughs. "Nah, mates, it ain't my ship, but you lot musta been sent over be Jorune to act as guards. He done right class there. I'm the first mate. Yers can call me Starbuck. Cappy's on the quarterdeck; ye might wanna talk with 'im there." He steps out of the way to let you on board The Unexpected.

The main deck is covered by coiled lines and barrels, which an enterprising crew of half-elves and humans are bringing down into the holds. They pay no heed to you (unless one of you happens to get in the way, in which you get a sharp, "Oyyer, bloke, wot's the matter with you?") as you move aft to the quarterdeck (the after part of the main deck, slightly raised and usually reserved for officers).

A broad half-elf, bearded, but official looking in demeanor and dress, stands near the wheel, talking with a couple of younger half-elves. He stops when he sees you coming and waves them away. "Well, then, you must be the guards that Jorune sent me. Interesting. A 'forged, a shifter, a gnome, and a human. No one's going to mistake you for Lyrandar folk. Very well. Your watches will be four hours on, eight off, four hours on, eight off, all the way through the trip — I can fill in the other eight with my crew and some other treasure hunters that I've got on board. You will spend all of your watches on deck. You have the run of the second deck and main deck, but the quarterdeck and my cabin are off limits, save for by my invitation." He pauses for a moment to make sure things are clear.

"You'll bunk with the crew down on the second deck, forward. You will eat immediately following your watch. You will eat what the crew eats. In case we're attacked, I ask you to wait for my instructions, unless we're boarded, in which case, you should do what you feel is best. Questions?"

"No sir, other than I would like to know the name of the man I'm serving, if you don't mind?" Gannon asks the captain.

This is going to quite a trip... I cannot wait to see what we might find in Xen'drik!
