[D&D 4e] IG's "Those Left Behind, Chapter 4(e)"

The bear fights to get to Caerwyn, but the heros' continuous onslaght prevents it from doing so. As it roars in pain from the numerous wounds, those farther away can see that the bear hasn't come alone.

A hulking, two-headed giant emerges from the mountain and sets its eyes on Buurt. The thing approaches the half-orc from behind and lands a solid blow with a tree-trunk sized club. Buurt staggers, but the experienced warrior miraculously stays on his feet.

Using the moment of his foe's attack, Buurt casts himself back and away from the pair of foes. With a fierce, bloodied grimace upon his face, the half-orc chuckles as he says, "This just got a bit more interesting."

Shaimon Hu'u, druidic human ranger

"Hey, that hurt!" Shai hisses as the bear's claw connects. "Didn' you hear Caerwyn? He wants yer attention."

As the new foe appears, Shai gulps. "Guys, I think I know maybe why brother bear hear came barelling down the hill where he wouldn't."

Dyspeer barks, crouching on the opposite side of the bear, hackles raised.

"Right. One at a time," Shai says, as if in response to the wolf. Dyspeer pounces, jaws snapping, and clamps onto the bear's shoulder. The beast howls and bucks, but when Dyspeer releases to land back on the ground, it leaves the bear's back exposed to Shai, who pounds the dire bear between the shoulderblades with his warhammer.

Caewyn strides forward, his fullblade held aloft and draws upon a wellspring of internal fortitude to protect him against the beast.

"Talashia! Uulark! Can you help Buurt? The bear's mine. Come beast, let's dance" the warrior calls out, smashing the creature in the face with the flat of his blade, leaving it seeing stars.

*Bear takes 11 damage from Divine Challenge

Move: AE21
Minor: Virtue - spend a healing surge and gain 25 temp. hp (also gain +2 to attack rolls from Resurgent Attack feat)
Standard: Thunderhawk Rage on Bear - vs ac (incl +2 for flank & +2 from feat); dmg (1d20+17+2+2=36, 2d12+10=14) hits AC 36 for a measly 14 damage but the bear is also dazed (save ends) <- this causes it to grant combat advantage so +2 to hit and it can't take any opportunity attacks (and if you happen to be a rogue...more goodies). Caerwyn enters the rage of the ThunderHawk. 1/turn he can use a free action to attempt to knock an enemy prone
Free: Thunder Hawk Rage Attack - vs fort (incl +2 for flank & +2 from feat) (1d20+17+2+2=26) "hits" fort 26. If successful, knocks bear prone.

*If bear doesn't attack takes another 11 divine damage. If it does attack I'll use the Curtain of Steel immediate Reaction power - +17 vs ac to hit, 3d12+10 damage on a hit.

Uulark Simental, Longtooth Shifter Cleric of Sehanine L11

Uulark hears his friend's instructions and moves to comply. He boldly strides toward AF17 intoning a Healing Word for Shai as he goes. When he reaches the indicated position, Uulark invokes the power of Sehanine to conjure up a shining radiant spear of force which pierces the Ettin's shoulder, and then pulls a few feet away from the creature and just hovers there. "Take that beast! I'd have thought that when you grew that second head you'd have taken special care not to make it as damnably ugly as the first!"

OH YEAH! ALL UULARK'S ALLIES NOW HAVE COMBAT ADVANTAGE AGAINST THE ETTIN!
[sblock=Oh My]I just noticed that the spiritual weapon attack is a threat um I mean a crit (I don't have to confirm in 4E do I? Just does max +, right? So that's 22 damage, if so.)

On a crit you also roll an extra 2d6 for your magic implement plus the max damage.

Also, Healing Word actually heals 3d6+Wis mod +target's healing surge value[/sblock]

Shaimon Hu'u, druidic human ranger

"Don' worry 'bout me, Uulark," Shai says, though the gash in his side now shows through cleanly-healed skin instead of the bloody tear the bear had left. "Buurt's done taken a much bigger beatin'!"

OOC: Much appreciated, though I'm afraid you may have wasted some points. Shai's surge value alone (19) takes him up to full, and he has to spend the surge to heal anything, correct? Unless Healing Word provides temp points past full? I don't think it does, but I haven't really looked at 4e clerics yet.

[sblock=resources used] Encounter: Action point, Beast Rush, Synchronized Strike
Surges used / per day: 1/10[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC for jkason]
Thanks for the concern, but the Healing Word is a class feature (which ranks it below even at-will powers!) of clerics that can be done all day long if necessary. ;) But you have it right - if Shai was down less that his healing surge value then the extra was wasted. Still, you can't ordinarily spend a healing surge when you're in combat, so you couldn't have healed so soon without the help.

Ooops, thanks for the corrections in the next post, renau1g!

It is a class feature, but also a special encounter power that can be used 2x in any encounter, but only once per round.

The other common ways to use a healing surge in combat are second wind (but for non-dwarves is a standard action) or healing potions (require minor to draw and minor to drink) [/sblock]
