[D&D 4e] IG's "Those Left Behind, Chapter 4(e)"

Uulark Simental, Longtooth Shifter Cleric of Sehanine L11

"Here, there, is there much difference? Our lives are filled with killing no matter where we find ourselves. *sigh*" Uulark is evidently a little depressed for one reason or another.

"You can always leave," Talashia says to Uulark, and for a surprise there is actual compassion in her voice. "Go join a temple somewhere. Hang up your weapons and armor and preach to a congregation. No one would blame you after what we've seen."

She takes a breath and looks at the others.

"As for Ironfell, we didn't strike any kind of a blow. We failed completely. The hags completed their ritual and we were unable to stop them. I doubt very much that banishing us five days away was all it did. I did recognize one of the terms they were using. Shadowfell. It's a parallel world. Another plane of existence. Maybe they were drawing on it for the ritual...or using it somehow. I don't know."

"Nay, not so, Talashia! In for a penny, in for a pound. You'll not be shed of me so quickly."

Shaimon Hu'u, druidic human ranger

"As for Ironfell, we didn't strike any kind of a blow. We failed completely. The hags completed their ritual and we were unable to stop them. I doubt very much that banishing us five days away was all it did. I did recognize one of the terms they were using. Shadowfell. It's a parallel world. Another plane of existence. Maybe they were drawing on it for the ritual...or using it somehow. I don't know."

Shai frowns, glancing out the window again. "If it sent us this far, then the magic can reach out here, too, yeah?" he asks. "I mean, what if all those critters, and now that two-headed whalloper, what if that's the hag magic reachin' out here? So then, maybe we can still do something by helping out here." Shai's natural optimism seems to return as he strings together his own semi-logic to side-step an admission of failure.

"Nay, not so, Talashia! In for a penny, in for a pound. You'll not be shed of me so quickly."

"Huzzah! No one gives up 'round here!" the burly man says, slapping Uulark on the back and brandishing a wide, toothy grin.

"Damn girl, I thought I was the pessimist here." He shakes his head. "Maybe the hags succeed, but we did take a few minions out and I hope we finished off all those Chaos Beasts. Unchecked they could have eventually taken the whole city down."

Uulark says, "Shadowfell? What do I know from a Shadowfell? How do you suppose we ended up in these parts, and where should we go next, do you suppose? Is our quest to be completed on this sphere, or does our destiny lie across other, stranger planes than these? I know not what to say regarding our falllen foes -- critters and 'two-headed whallopers' and what not."

Buurt quietly listens to his companions discussion, his thoughts are his own for much of it as he contemplates the scope of what's transpired. Even for someone use to the insanity that occurs in a world of magic, it's still not something that he's just use to in his frame of reference.

"I won't pretend to understand much of how we got here," states Buurt after awhile. "But, then again, I ain't one to narrow my focus so much that I miss my surroundings."

"It's about the path walked, not the place it ends up." With a toothy bring, the half-orc says, "And I plan to finish this with you all, one way or another."

"We'll need to go back to Ironfell," Talashia muses. "But we'll need to be smart about it. In any event, we're not geared for a five day journey right now. Lets see what's going on here, stock up and get our bearings...then we'll just see about those hags."

She smiles at their host and addresses him.

"Thanks for your hospitality. I've one last favor to ask of you...if you could tell us how to get to Timberfall, was it? We'd be much obliged. Or if there's a closer town...really we just need to get to the closest settlement there is."

Thankfully, Uulark elects to remain silent for the moment, and just looks with admiration upon Talashia, as if he would be totally adrift without her guidance. It's been a trying day for the Cleric. *sigh*

"I need some air," Caerwyn says. The talk of hags and magical teleportation seems to have done the barbarian in for a moment. He pulls out his chair and uncharacteristically kisses his sister on the top of her head as he passes her by, and then quietly steps outside. Through the dirty window, Buurt can see the holy warrior take a deep breath of the fresh air before he rounds the corner of the shack, out of site.

The old man watches, and then answers Talashia's question. "A couple days west, just along the river. Be best to wait until morning to give you as much daylight as possible. No telling what's lingerin' in those lights at night, and I sure wouldn't wanna find out!"
