D&D 4E D&D 4E Style

After consulting my Draconomicon, comparing that picture to the illustrations of the green and blue dragons in the example dragon section, I am wondering if they are A - Easing up on the physical description limits of dragons to make each one look more unique; or (hopefully) B - Killing the sacred cow of colour-coded dragon. That picture is so much cooler if that is a green 4e dragon rather than a 4e green dragon.

According to the little YouTube films, neither. They've just changed the way the green dragon looks. You see the green dragon virtual miniature near the end, and they mention they've done some redesign work on how dragons look.

Art and graphic design

I really like the new logo and the art I've seen seems to be less dungeonpunk and more like the classic stuff, albeit updated for modern sensibilities. It seems to be less random posing, and more dramatic scenes... What do you guys think? What are your hopes for the art direction of the new edition? I know there's not much out yet, but I figure this might be a good place to talk about it as it develops.

I think there is already a thread about this very subjetc "4e style" IIRC or something like that. No need to bloat the board.

Someone got into the website and grabbed a D&D 4E miniature image.

Finally they dropped the dangly needle-nose.

He looks more muscular than before. But, from a "look" point of view, the difference with ogres is blurred. Troll = blue regenerating ogres ?

That's a pretty nasty reaction to a piece of art. Doesn't anybody around here like his style, or am I alone in thinking it looks awesome?

You arent alone, but lets be honest. ENWorld is just a stones throw away from the home for bitter old grognards. Didnt you get the memo? Around here, everything new is bad. And anime. And video-gamey. Regardless of whether it is.

This was the case in the original Chainmail (i.e. pre-D&D minis game w/ fantasy supplement from 1971, not WotC's aborted minis game from 2001) -- ogres and trolls were considered synonymous, and then there were "true trolls" who were like ogre-trolls but way tougher (they never checked morale and could only be killed by Hero-types, whereas normal trolls (ogres) were just equivalent to 6 normal men). So perhaps, in this regard, WotC is taking a step way back into the game's past...

Actually, I'm suprised no one's noticed by now, but if you look at the art in the D&D Sizzle video, the pictures of the trolls they use match up nicely with how the were drawn at the time. 1st edition skinny troll, 3E droopy nosed one, and during the last segment, you'll see the 4E trolls are quite nice, and (mostly) match right up with the minature.
