D&D 5E [D&D 5E] Tattered Memories: An Adventure in Tethyr (COMPLETE)

Brue examined the outcropping, trying not to stare directly at the creatures attempting to hide against the wall. Other than the various small rocks littering the outcropping, she didn't immediately notice anything else other than three ropes anchored to the center of the outcropping by an iron ring. All three ropes led to the edge of the outcropping and then into the water. One rope led west, one east, and the final south. Brue was close to the rope that trailed into the water heading south.

[section] Brue, figuring it might be better to start examining the ropes in linear order, walked over to the east rope and picked it up. She tugged at the end to see if it would come out of the water. She pulled on the portion of the rope fasted to the ring. What on earth does this do? What's it for? The genasi made a study of the ring, the ropes, and the outcropping, unsure whether the ropes were used to tether something (or someone?!). She kept a surreptitious eye on the reptilians while she made her examination of the ropes.[/section]

As Brue picked up the rope and pulled, she could see the reptilian creatures nod to each other and rush forward to attack!

GM: Round 1
Creature 1 Attack (Claw/Claw/Bite): (1d20+4)[12] (1d20+4)[10] (1d20+4)[16]
Creature 1 Damage (Claw/Bite): (1d4+2)[6] (1d4+2)[4]

Creature 2 Attack (Claw/Claw/Bite): (1d20+4)[10] (1d20+4)[6] (1d20+4)[11]
All misses...

Brue: 27/37
Creature 1: 00/??
Creature 2: 00/??

The creatures swooped in and attacked Brue with tooth and claw. Following in the creatures' wakes was an awful, stomach-churning stench. The first creature managed to tear at her with a claw while biting her arm. Fortunately for her, the first assailant's angle of attack prevented the second creature from scoring a hit.

OOC: Interesting, initiative ties are up to the DM per the rules. I'm going to go ahead and make a ruling that, in my games, ties are determined by highest Dex Mod. If still tied, D20 roll off until a winner is determined. In this case, the creatures have a Dex Mod of 0, which is higher than Brue's.

Feel free to roll an Intelligence (Nature) check to determine what you're fighting.

Finally, Brue needs to roll two CON saves (DC 12). If she fails either one, she has the Poisoned condition this round. A poisoned creature has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.

[section] Brue hadn't figured on the reptilians attacking. She'd left her longsword purposely sheathed, but it seemed her intrusion on the creatures' territory was enough to spark a fight. She focused on dodging the reptilians' scratching and biting, and drew her blade.[/section]

OOC: Dodge: until the start of your next turn, any attack roll made against you has disadvantage if you can see the attacker, and you make Dexterity saving throws with advantage. You lose this benefit if you are incapacitated or your speed drops to zero. PHB 192. If Brue can't draw her longsword and dodge, she'll just dodge instead.

OOC: Brue can draw the longsword and dodge in the same round. She succeeded on her saving throw and is not poisoned. She's also immune to the poisoning effects of the creatures' stench for 24 hours. Speaking of the creatures, Brue absolutely knows what they are, the stench driving it home. These creatures are evil, subterranean reptilians known as troglodytes. They have chameleon-like skin and emit a putrid stench that causes most humanoids to gag when exposed to it. They have a significant sensitivity to sunlight, but that does her little good here. I've got a lot of rolling to do, so give me a few to get the next round up.

GM: Round 2
Creature 1 Attack w/Disadvantage (Claw/Claw/Bite): (1d20+4)[6] (1d20+4)[5] (1d20+4)[8]
All misses.

Creature 2 Attack w/Disadvantage (Claw/Claw/Bite): (1d20+4)[17] (1d20+4)[9] (1d20+4)[8]
Creature 2 Damage (Claw): (1d4+2)[5]

Brue: 22/37
Creature 1: 00/??
Creature 2: 00/??

Brue kicked out, forcing the creatures to give her some space. With the breathing room, she drew Greycastle's sword, assumed a two handed-stance, and performed an impressive display of swordsmanship; swinging the weapon in a flurry of parries. While the creatures attempted to attack again, her skilled expertise managed to deflect all of the attacks, save a single claw, which gained purchase on her leg. Hissing in pain, Brue wished she had heavier armor. Having successfully beaten back her attackers, she turned her thoughts to offense.

The creatures hiss at one another. If it is some form of language, Brue doesn't understand it.

OOC: FYI, forcing them to have disadvantage through Dodge allowed you to change five hits to one hit. The action is to you for the bottom half of Round 2.

[section] The genasi tightened her two-handed grasp on the longsword and swung at whichever of the two troglodytes had damaged her most.[/section]
