D&D in National Review!

NPR did a 10 minute blurb on it today. They even had an interview with Gary Gygax where he briefly discussed the history of the game. And then someone else talking about how much the game meant to them. It was fun to hear, and know that there are 30 mllion people playing the game right now... maybe more- People really need to get out of the closet.. ;)

To those offended by NR online:

I read as much tnr and 'the nation' as anyone, and even I find something to like in the National Review. Most notably, their arts and literature reviews are fun. I also think the nr crew has a certain geeky charm (including a penchant for bowties) that disarms me, excepting Kate O'beirn, but maybe that's because I see too much of her on the 'Capital Gang'. At the very least, its better than the bland Weekly Standard (this is from an aesthetic angle, not a political one).

Great article! Thanks for the post on this, it brightened my day. As a side note, as a conservative who doesnt like bashing his fellow game geeks, I hope this doesnt degenerate into a political thrash against our online chums!

Tread very carefully, gang. Political discussions, even oblique ones, will get this thread closed in a heartbeat. I wish there was a place ENWorlders could discuss such things together. Until there is, though, keep it neutral.

On topic: Cool article! I love it when my hobby gets mainstream press.

Usually, the "no politics and religion on ENWorld" restriction is a very, very good thing (even if it's kept me from posting things occasionally). But the notion of casting the gang from NRO as D&D characters popped into my head as soon as I saw that article, and it just can't be done here without crossing over that line.

Oh merciful heavens...I'm FREE!!!.....Frrrrreeeeeeeeeeeee!:p

On a seriious note: That is a wonderful article, the best I have seen or heard in years.

And yes, time to leave the closet folks, and walk in the sunshine, with head held high.

Great article. Probably the single best article about D&D I've ever seen in a mainstream publication.
You do realize that Dragon probably has more subscribers than NR, right? Wonkish political magazines (National Review for mainline Republicans, The New Republic for "New Democrats", The Nation for "Progressive" Democrats, The Weekly Standard for "Neoconservatives", Reason for libertarians, and a few others at various points in the American political spectrum) are pretty popular among political junkies and politicians, but they're not all that mainstream.

Dragon is in the 60,000 range, I believe. I have NO idea how wonk opinion magazines do. I used to write for a free entertainment magazine (On Tap for those in the DC metro area who might have seen it) and they did print runs in the range of 500,000. But those were mostly used to line birdcages.

However -- to bring it back on topic -- I think the D&D article in a past issue of Jane that I read about in last month's Dragon to be a lot more mainstream than NR. You don't get much more mainstream than a magazine about women's sex lives and fashion tips.
