D&D in National Review!

The author of the article is a HS friend of mine. It's been years since we've talked (despite living within 45 minutes of each other). I read his column on a weekly basis. We have our political differences but he's an incredibly bright guy and not the fire-breathing partisan one is accustomed to finding in the political writing world.

But hey, I discovered that Steve Colbert is a gamer, that's cool..

I figured some of the Daily Show writers were gamers from the occasional gamer joke on the show. Neat to find out that Colbert is one of 'em.

I also didn't know that Kim Mohan was still involved. There's a blast from the past...

Dragon is in the 60,000 range, I believe. I have NO idea how wonk opinion magazines do. I used to write for a free entertainment magazine (On Tap for those in the DC metro area who might have seen it) and they did print runs in the range of 500,000. But those were mostly used to line birdcages.

However -- to bring it back on topic -- I think the D&D article in a past issue of Jane that I read about in last month's Dragon to be a lot more mainstream than NR. You don't get much more mainstream than a magazine about women's sex lives and fashion tips.

Most of the major opinion zines have a circulation around 100,000. But that doesn't neccessarily reflect their total value, because apparently with little exception, they all operate at a loss. But then, a large part of their readership tends to be of the 'influential' class, so you often see nr or tnr's stuff filter down to the more 'mainstream' media. But for the most part, they preach to the converted (and obsessed).

Nisarg, even brushing on politics usually creates problems. In the future, please stay far away from the subject.

Ecliptic, if you see a post that's a problem, please report it using the link next to "edit/quote." Do not respond in kind. That just creates additional tensions, and no one wants to see a fun thread go down in flame.

Thanks, gang - carry on!

I noticed that article too (I read NRO every day) and was going to post it here since the article is politically neutral. But someone beat me to it!

LOL! I first read the article on FreeRepublic.com (a VERY conservative political forum), of all places.

I was amazed at the positive reaction it got over there. The thread turned into 'National Geek Coming-Out Day' or something.

For all I know, I may be able to cobble together an all freeper PbP game.

BiggusGeekus,

Thanks for making that article known. I very much enjoyed it. :)

P-cat,

I was tempted to respond to some of the political points raised so far, but mindful of your warning, I'll be good and temper the urge. ;)
