D&D Miniatures alternative.

You know if a new company came out with a collectable minis line, they could do a lot worse than to keep them at a 1 inch base scale....and see that they bear a passing resemblance to D&Dish fantasy races.

I've been using minis since the early Ral Partha days. Sadly my leads have suffered the inevitable fate that they all eventually seem to, being rather fragile for general use. When I bought my first batch of the Wizard's plastics I was ecstatic. Finally someone had made something light, durable, and reasonably well detailed.

Having looked at the alternatives, they don't really seem to be. Counters are a poor substitute, at best, and I don't want to go back to painting leads. At this point I've just ordered another 20 fairly generic larges, to add to my collection of a couple of hundred in total, which should comfortably see me through my current campaign. Along with those a friend has made available his collection, of about the same size. No worries.

The Mage Knight and to-be LotR clix look like real possibilities... except for that dumb base.

Are the bases the standard 1" model? I suppose the base could be painted black. Some people have attached other miniatures to D&D standard bases. Has anyone done either of these with these miniatures - if so, how did it turn out?

As for me and my son, I doubt I'll get any metal minis. Too costly and fragile.

I swore the same thing for two decades, and I regret it deeply. I really like having the freedom and power to paint what I want. I spend a little time in my miniature painting area every day now, and have even gotten into doing scenery (which is super cheap if you do it right.)

My son was the one who discovered it at a Reaper Paint-and-take run by Phil (anybody who's been to a con in the Midwest knows Phil, ironically, he's my local FLGS). He loves doing it, and I think your guy will love it too.

They are more fragile and harder to move about, I use a big tackle box with drawers and wadded paper towel bits if I need to pack them. The paint jobs on minis you do yourself, after you know what you're doing, absolutely look better.

Where do you buy the standard D&D bases? Special glue? They they hold pretty secure?

You can buy sacks of 1" wooden disks at hobby stores like Michael's for something like 5¢ or 10¢ a disk. Cover them with black spray primer, and they should work great for that. I use wooden disks to base my metal minis, prime the whole thing including base, and then paint the mini and leave the base as just matte black primer.

How does the scale of Rackhams Confrontation Ragnarok minis compare to D&D minis? I know they're 28mm but is it an extreme difference?
