D&D Miniatures alternative.

The differences are mostly in terms of artistic style- Confrontation minis are gorgeous, but they are highly stylized. They also don't have the same breadth of mini types.

I swore the same thing for two decades, and I regret it deeply. I really like having the freedom and power to paint what I want. I spend a little time in my miniature painting area every day now, and have even gotten into doing scenery (which is super cheap if you do it right.)

My son was the one who discovered it at a Reaper Paint-and-take run by Phil (anybody who's been to a con in the Midwest knows Phil, ironically, he's my local FLGS). He loves doing it, and I think your guy will love it too.

They are more fragile and harder to move about, I use a big tackle box with drawers and wadded paper towel bits if I need to pack them. The paint jobs on minis you do yourself, after you know what you're doing, absolutely look better.

Actually, we paint our D&D minis all the time. Often we'll just add details, but sometimes we'll do wholesale changes. It's fun. I wouldn't be surprised to see us choosing PC metal minis and painting them sometime. But wholescale for all our minis (which is what we're used to), its too expensive, time consuming, and burdensome. Maybe we'll change our minds...
