D&D needs improvement

If D&D is too complex, I'd hate to see the orginal poster's thought on one of the actually complex RPG systems out there. Might make his head explode.

Yup. This makes a decent troll, especially with the tone of outraged indignation. Seriously - if you dislike it, why play it? Warhammer FRPG might be more fun for you.

Not a troll or personal attack. I stated my opinion specifically as well, calling on specific game mechanics. I don't see how you can call a post a troll simply because it has a negative connotation.

Just my observation of several things that can be improved in D&D, and why they should be improved.

I'd give it a 6/10 on the troll-o-meter. It scores very high on Completely Missing the Point and gets some bonus points for Dubious Appeals to Historical Accuracy, but the opening diatribe lacks bite, there are no jibes at anime or video games, profanity or thinly veiled profanity, or irrational pleas to the emotions. Also, not enough accusations of munchkinrey.

Yeah I agree with my preposters. There are some things I don't like as well (like XP calculation) but that's not much of an issue to me, I give out situation based XP.
And if you see so many flaws, play a different game or write your own :p

Probably what I'll end up doing.

Ok. Now I have Dr. Pepper coming out of my nose! Thank you very much!

Well first off was the comment that 'surely we all agree to some extent.' You can't know what we all agrree or disagree with.

Second is all you did was rip things. Comments like:
Grappling - Oh good lord almighty.
doesn't make for anything close to constructive.

If you think things can and should be improved, do more than a quick rant about each item. Give a reasoned arguement as to what is wrong and maybe even suggest what could be done.

Could you still explain why would you want to include a death spiral mechanic into the game (the hit point issue you mention)? You say you want it for realism, and I'm asking why would you want realism in D&D?

D&D isn't my favorite system either but I guess the problem I have with the post is that it takes issue with so many core mechanics it really strikes me that D&D simply isn't the game for you. Seriously. Not writing off your concerns which are all valid and well stated, but your problems are with core elements of the system.

There are a ton of great games out there that you should try. I'm sure you'll find something closer to your liking. Asking that a few key issues in a game get changed because they bug you is one thing. Asking for a complete overhaul suggests that you bought the wrong game.

I agree with a lot of what he says in terms of my gaming preferences, but is a D&D Forum really the place to come seeking like minds?

D&D is a poor tool for modelling the realities of Medieval life or Realistic combat.

However, it is great at being D&D.

Far and away the best version of D&D they've yet produced (Shut it Diaglo). D&D has been around long enough that it is basically it's own genre. You aren;t playign a game about realistic Medieval warfare; you are playing D&D.

Warhammer FRPG might be more fun for you.

I doubt it. WFRP is grimmer, but still pretty fuity as far as realistic combat or perfectly well-reasoned character classses.

The original poster should check out Harn by Columbia Games . It owuld be ideal for what he's describing.
