D&D Presentation from GAMA

The GAMA Tradeshow, which is the event run by the Game Manufacturer's Association in Las Vegas, is taking place right now. WotC was there, as were hundreds of other game producers, and put on a presentation. Note that most of this stuff is intended for the industry, not for consumers (who will find things at events like Gen Con geared towards them).

They covered 2014, the 5E launch ("Biggest Launch Ever"), and Tyranny of Dragons, and talked a little about the upcoming Elemental Evil storyline. They also spoke a little about licensed products from companies like WizKids and Gale Force 9. There's a slideshow gallery of the presentation at figures.com for those interested, but there's nothing really new there - though there's some cool art. They said that "Tyranny of Dragons Crits" and that sales were "Fantastic", with immediate reprints being required 7 days after launch.

I admit....if I was going to expect some new info on upcoming D&D content GAMA was the first stop I'd check. I'm glad I like this game from the "core three" alone because if we needed more we'd be up the proverbial creek about now. Hmmm.

That's silly. GAMA is a trade show for vendors, not for fans. WotC has never used GAMA, to my recollection, as a venue for major spoilers on products the fans are anticipating. Gaming conventions make much more sense for those kind of reveals, especially GenCon.

WotC never even hinted that major news was going to drop at GAMA. The folks complaining about the lack of major news are premature.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that WotC OF COURSE has plans for the rest of 2015, but those plans are somewhat in flux and not ready to be announced quite yet. WotC has learned the hard way that if you announce a product, then later change your plans, the crankier fans get all in a tizzy. Heck, this happens even when WotC doesn't announce things, like the changes to the Elemental Evil Player's Companion.

While I would have loved for some juicy tidbits over GAMA, I'm fine with waiting for WotC to fill me in on their plans when they are ready to do so. I've got plenty of fun games to play, including 5th edition, while I wait.

According to my FLGS owner, they are disappointed that there wasn't some sort of information on planned releases....they like having some direction for their store budget and planning. So.....I'll just suggest that retailers are arguably more important to present future plans to than Joe Gamer.

However, I agree completely with you on paragraph 2. It's just that it's hard not to get caustic with posts like this. I am inclined to say that their plans involve a lot of video game, board game and miniatures licensing, and the tabletop RPG books are probably (at best) going to be quarterly events. But I still stand by my D&D 5E as my go-to game, even if it isn't buried under a tied of product support.

If we *needed* more stuff to play 5E D&D, I'm pretty sure WotC *would have* prepared, announced, and released stuff by now. But since we don't... they haven't.
