D&D Presentation from GAMA

The GAMA Tradeshow, which is the event run by the Game Manufacturer's Association in Las Vegas, is taking place right now. WotC was there, as were hundreds of other game producers, and put on a presentation. Note that most of this stuff is intended for the industry, not for consumers (who will find things at events like Gen Con geared towards them).

They covered 2014, the 5E launch ("Biggest Launch Ever"), and Tyranny of Dragons, and talked a little about the upcoming Elemental Evil storyline. They also spoke a little about licensed products from companies like WizKids and Gale Force 9. There's a slideshow gallery of the presentation at figures.com for those interested, but there's nothing really new there - though there's some cool art. They said that "Tyranny of Dragons Crits" and that sales were "Fantastic", with immediate reprints being required 7 days after launch.

They went to a trade show and talked about the past? Who does that?
They are still selling those products to retailers. They also talked about current and future products as well; reminding retailers of how successful 5E has been is a good tactic.

Maybe this has been discussed elsewhere, but why is the Elemental Evil storyline taking place on Faerun and not Greyhawk?

Storywise, the Evil Elder Elemental Evil Eye of Evil or whatever it is called is a planar baddie with it's eye on various mortal worlds (I *think* this is supported by prior WotC/TSR publications as well).

Metawise, this module (like Tyranny of Dragons) is being mirrored with a video game event in the Neverwinter MMO. Thus, Faerun.

Give that man the cigar. It's all about cross-promotion - MMO, novels, core product, etc..

There are no Greyhawk novels and there is no D&D video game set in Greyhawk. All of their "other media" content has been set in the Forgotten Realms. Their most popular characters (read: money makers) are Drizzt and Elminster. They chose the Realms as the default setting for all their content for now (but they just won't admit that it's the "default" setting).

Even D&D Online is getting the shaft due to its Eberron setting. No official Elemental Evil storyline for Turbine. Interestingly enough, Turbine is still going to release an "Elemental Evil" dungeon based loosely on T1-4, but it is Turbine's internal efforts alone and is not being promoted by WotC as part of the larger cross-promotion. I actually get the feeling WotC wishes DDO would die so they could get the license back (which is also why "Neverwinter" doesn't have "D&D" in its branding).

It is. Night Below is one. Gary Gygax, in an interview with the Oerth Journal, also says that Tharizdun is multi-planar.

Tharizdun made his first appearance in the Realms during one of the 4E Encounters seasons (and the Abyssal Plague series of books).

Cheers!
