Good one. I'll do you one better. Bard 5/Wizard 4/Sorcerer 1/Sublime Chord 1, adding Sublime Chord caster level to Sorcerer caster level for a caster level of 2.

EDIT: Tack a level of Wild Mage on top of that, adding to Sublime Chord levels, and you get a caster level of 0 , effective caster level from 1 to 6.

#6 (continued). If we venture into the murky area of partially-charged magic items, consider a half-fiend half-gray elf Warmage 1 with a +2 headband of intellect and a partially charged staff of empowered disintegrate or staff of repeat spell disintegrate.

At 32-point buy, the character could look as follows: Str 12 (8 +4 half-fiend), Dex 16 (12 +4 half-fiend), Con 12 (12 +2 half-fiend, -2 gray elf), Int 26 (18 +4 half-fiend, +2 gray elf, +2 enhancement), Wis 10, Cha 16 (14 +2 half-fiend). A headband of intellect costs 4000 gp, and a staff of empowered disintegrate crafted at caster level 20 with one charge remaining costs 8 x 20 x 750 / 50 = 2400 gp. A staff of repeat spell disintegrate crafted at caster level 20 costs 9 x 20 x 750 / 50 = 2700 gp. If he wants, he can also afford a potion of fox's cunning, which increases his Intelligence to 28.

If he uses a staff, he gets to add his Intelligence bonus to damage because of his Warmage Edge. Without the effects of the potion, he deals a maximum of (40 x 6 + 8) x 1.5 x 2 = 744 points of damage with the staff of empowered disintegrate and (40 x 6 +8) x 2 x 2 = 992 points of damage over two rounds with the staff of repeat spell disintegrate. The potion increases the maximum damage to 746 and 996 respectively (the odd point of damage gets rounded down by empower in the first instance).

EDIT: Oops, I forgot that a warmage only gets to add his warmage edge once per casting. This will affect the maximum damage when he uses a staff of repeat spell disintegrate as he will not get his warmage edge damage bonus in the second round. This reduces the maximum damage by 16 points in the potion-less scenario and 18 points in the potion scenario for a total of 976 and 978 respectively.

is it allowed to use familiar or animal companions to help? cause then you could just have some weird familiar.. give it a Disentigrate spell modifyed in some way...

But then he wouldn't be a "using only a standard action". He would be using a standard action plus a swift action plus maybe a free action to tell his familar or animal companion to do something.

That doesn't work on two counts, tho, you need to be able to cast 3rd level spells to enter Sublime Chord and naturally have to add it to the (a) class that fulfilled this requirement, too.

As for the other point, the text in Complete Arcane says that "A sublime chord's caster level for both her sublime chord spells and the spells she gains from other arcane spellcasting classes is determined by adding her sublime chord level to her level in another arcane spellcasting class. If she had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming a sublime chord, she much choose to which class to add her sublime chord levels for the purpose of determining her sublime chord caster level."

Technically, a sublime chord does not have to add her sublime chord level to her highest arcane spellcaster level, or to an arcane spellcasting class in which she can cast 3rd-level spells. She can make a completely sub-optimal choice if she wants to, e.g. adding her sublime chord level to her lowest arcane spellcasting class.

That said, a Suel Arcanamach can cast 3rd-level spells at 4th level, so a perhaps more "satisfying" solution is to have a Bard 4/Swashbuckler 3/Suel Arcanamach 4/Sublime Chord 1/Wild Mage 1, with sublime chord levels adding to Suel Arcanamach levels. This character has a caster level of (4 + 1 + 1 - 3) = 3 for his arcane spells, and effectively casts between 4th and 9th.

Yep, it isn't explicitly stated, but it should be obvious, that the class can only advance those classes, which are sufficient to fulfill the requirement.

Anyways, I think Wild Mage is irrelevant, since Wild Mage does not change the character's caster level (the permanent one, that is).

I see no problem with getting the caster level down to 1, or even zero if that's allowed, by using the Mageslayer feat.
