[D&D3.5] Paths of Legend: The Azgundi Tournaments (OOC)

Hey hey...wanted to get this up asap. It's the raw mechanics for my dragon-sorceror submission. The description and background will be up shortly, but this is just to get my foot in the door. :)

Let me know if there's any problems, and they will be fixed. Spells on scrolls are from Spell Compendium, and were chosen in-character specifically to help with the tournament. Her goal is to try for a lordship with the long term goal of trying to create a center of magical knowledge and learning that is a credible alternative to Thay.

Looks good so far. Background will be helpful. :D

One note, you don't seem to have a melee weapon. Might want to reconsider that. ;)

Assuming you spent the 100 gold pieces on the familiar, my math shows 26 gold pieces remaining. Double check your gold for me, please. Also, as per the house rule, you don't need to worry about ammunition (unless its made of special materials).

Okay, fixed the goof on funds. Thanks for the catch there. Not sure how I failed that so epically. :)

For dueling, will we be provided a weapon, or do I need to bring my own? Also, is there a limit on spells that can be cast previous to an event? :)

I'll get dagger and perhaps a light mace or something...but in a pinch, she can use her breath weapon in melee without incurring an AoO since it's an Su ability...

I'm guessing that would be frowned on in an event. (^_^)

As for background, I have some fun ideas as to her origins and some long term stuff. Her short term goals at this point are mostly to garner sufficient wealth, power and standing to achieve her long term goals...which is, I admit, a bit tepid. I would like to tie her into some intrigue here at the tournament, giving her more reason to be here than just "trying to win something."

Perhaps you and I could brainstorm something like that up?

The basic idea of the character is that of a family from the Emirates, forced into exile during the reign of Fire because their line has bloodline ties to gold dragons. The Red Dragon Cults of the Emirates declared war on all such bloodlines, and waged a bloody secret war on them. In the end, only a few escaped the carnage. Shayuri's parents fled to Azgund and stoically endured the distrust they were met with. Well educated and of noble upbringing, her parents eventually rode out the initial xenophobia with their inexhaustible courtesy, hard work, and natural talents.

Shayuri was from birth marked by signs that her parents recognized. Her strange silver colored eyes, and magical eruptions that sometimes accompanied tantrums and outbursts. They taught her to keep her gifts subtle, and not to draw attention, for they feared rumors of an Emirate sorceror (breathing fire, natch) might draw Cult assassins. They taught Shayuri of her heritage and all they could of magic, which wasn't nearly enough. When Fire's despotic rule finally fell, and the power of the Red Dragon Cult waned with it (or so they hoped), Shayuri was finally allowed to spread her metaphorical wings, and soon decided to leave in search of more answers. When she found that Thay was one of the few places where magic was learned in a systematic, organized way she went there....and barely escaped with her life. Since then Shayuri has resolved that she would not permit Thay to have a stranglehold on knowledge, and is already taking steps to end it. One step at a time, with all the inexorable patience of her distant kin.

Yes, the dueling aspect of the tournament provides special dueling rapiers (they deal non-lethal damage).

The Cult of the Fire Lord actually gained power when the Fire Caste was ousted from the Emiran government as they gained converts from disillusioned members of the Caste. However, they are still a fairly minor threat that hasn't spread too far outside of the Emirates yet.

Draconic Heritage is most often found among the Drukkar, so Shayuri (the character) would've been unique since most Emiran magic supposedly stems from elementals and genies.

As for magical education and enlightenment, the Azgundi Adventurers' Guild is establishing the Arcane Academy, a school for magic, outside the capital. The school hasn't opened its doors yet, but construction of the campus is mostly complete and the first headmaster, a wizard named Entan, is currently looking for instructors. In exchange for a commitment to teaching for at least one semester, the initial entry fee to the Arcane Order (also newly established) would be waived.

-- Hmm! How long ago did the Fire Caste lose control of the Emirate? This might work even better... If enough time had passed, her family could have fled at the time the Fire Caste fell. Otherwise they could leave the Emirates due to persecution from their strange beliefs (regarding dragon blood and so on) rather than any connection to the Cult. I just figured enmity from the Cult might make a good background hook.

-- Yar, and I figure that's one reason this whole dragon bloodline thing is treated as a secret, regardless of any enmity with the cult. The persecution that drives them underground, and eventually from the Emirates, could just as easily come from the traditional djinn mainstream. Whichever works better.

-- What sort of qualifications would an instructor need? Shayuri's still pretty new to magic herself...and since she's not a wizard, would that impact anything?

The Fire Caste fell from power around 1135. The current year is 1152. Having some bad blood between the character and the Cult works quite well, so we can keep that if it works for your background.

At this point, Entan isn't being terribly picky about potential instructor qualifications, as long as they know magic and can teach it or something related to magical studies (Wizard class skills, metamagic feats, item creation feats and anyting else potentially related). The target age group for students is about 14 for humans.

Okay, cool...I'm liking how the background is shaping up.

Now I feel like we just need to tie it into the tournament. Are there any connections between the Arcane Academy or Adventurer's Guild and the tournament? With an academy already opening, that removes the motivation to begin her own, so I need a good reason for her to be entering this contest...

You had mentioned that her parents were Emiran nobility. If they were Fire Caste and fled the country after their Caste's fall, they may have urged Shayuri to compete in order to put the family back into noble circles, albeit in Azgund instead of the Emirates.

That...is an interesting idea. I was thinking 'noble upbringing' in a more general sense, to represent a sort of courtliness, but if they actually were nobility, that could be very interesting. Especially given their heretical beliefs and bloodline.

I'd originally thought to mark a division between Shay and her family...to reduce them more to background elements. This would mean they play a more active role in her life, and she in theirs...but that's not a bad thing. This would mean more tension between what she's supposed to do (go win a noble title so we can live the way we're MEANT to live!) and what she wants to do (go be a teacher in a magic academy). And tension is RP fun.

I think this'll do it then!

I shall write it up, and update the sheet.

Anything I should keep in mind that hasn't been mentioned?
