D&D's about fun right?

If everyone in the game has it, then no. And I wouldnt do it this way if some couldnt. But then again, the people I usually game with are from the "can" camp anyway.

Plus you have to realize, we arent making Lord of the Rings here, lol. A simple description and a believeable reaction goes a long way in this style of play, and most 5 year olds I know can do this well ;).

I like gritty day to day existence games that lead to huge, overwhelming, cosmically powerd games. The whole spectrum of possibility is waiting to be exploited!

And it's a heckuva lotta fun for me and others when something happens like for instance a psychic warrior wades into a host of gnolls absorbing their blows as subdual and recouping it back via his vampiric claws.

Or when a double empowered cone of cold happens to catch a red dragon on a failed save with a massive arctic blast of anime proportions...

Or when a paladin is surrounded in the holy power of his deity and charges forth summoning his faith and channeling it in a massive holy fireball hurtling at lance point towards an evil foe...

High level gaming? Bring it on. Optimized equipment/ability development to emphasize your strengths and help cope with your weaknesses? Well done, smart play.

I'm sorry. It's the way we play. We have fun doing it. Isn't that the point? [/B]

Sheeessh, Ron, kinda made me forget you were talking about "high-level" anything! Good short stories.

The examples also suggest the mental shorthand of "think of high level effects like you would Dragonball Z". That makes quite a few things a lot more envisionable...thanks Ron.

I'm even puzzledwhy the thread was brought up unless someone was out dissing you personally on here. Play however you want. Personally, I design around character concept without much thought for powergaming.

Right now I'm GM'ing and I'm not to worried over it either way. Basic nonpowergamed characters will end up challenged as much as optimized powergame characters. Maybe I use different tactics, smarter villains, and nastier creatures. But either way the group's going to be challanged so it works for me.

And different people have fun in different ways right?

-snippage-

There is a great deal of fun to be had playing with everyday joes in extraordinary situations.

Bravo. Well constructed. Good restraint. Beautiful use of control and moderation to engineer a fun and enjoyable story for everyone.

If it's fun, why not? If the DM can handle it, and everyone is having fun and having their chance to shine, then isn't it just another gaming style?

Does the fact that you might prefer a different style make this style any less valid? Does the fact that your characters on a whole are more or less powerful than WotC standards make them any less special or unique or worth any more or less?

-snippage-

We have fun doing it. Isn't that the point?

I agree! There are many, many ways to enjoy the same game. As long as it is fun, who's to say it's wrong?

My own idea of fun, as both player and DM, is a combination of what you've expounded and what some others claim is the only way. I'm a big fan of optimizing the potential of the character's abilities mathematically and developing the character with personality and style. If both can be done in tandem, it's truly a work of art.

IMO, sitting around and telling a shared story is fun, but it isn't D&D anymore than squeezing the rules despite the story for every advantage that can be had. That can also be fun, but it isn't D&D to me either. Finding that middle ground that brings both pursuits together is what I personally find fun no matter which side of the screen I find myself.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it (and I'll be seeking powerful items and learning new tricks the whole time!) :D

Deep Imersion Storytelling?...... Does anyone actually do this?
Well, I personally don't, but I pull that quote out when someone posts about extreme sanctity concerning the rules (a trait associated with the Kick-in-the-Door style, also described on page 8 of the DMG). ;)

My personal style is In-Depth, which seems like DIST from the outside, although it's usually more rules-laden than the Core to begin with. It goes with the concept that the rules define the parameters of the world, and thus the rules very much effect RP because you are playing a character within the world which has been defined by them.

For instance, defining Spider as Fine, Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, etc., is insuffient for the In-Depth because Spiders don't just come in different sizes. Hours of research on the web (no pun intended) is spent researching different Spiders, their environment, how they hunt/trap, lair, etc., and thus dozens to hundreds of Spider types are then developed. For the DM, it's hard work. For the Player, it's loaded with suprises because the next 8' wide Spider (a vibration sensitive, pouncing trap door spider with paralytic poison, jump and high Strength but poor AC due to body bulk) will likely have nothing in common with the last 8' wide Spider (a web-weaving trapper with deadly venom and high AC due to sleak shaping and higher Dexterity but less likely to hit due to its dependancy on web-trapped prey and lower Strength).

And that's just looking at Spiders; Let's not even get into Horse Breeding, the Expert Class or mapping.

But then, that's just how I have fun. :D

Yup. And you'd better check out the June 22nd Chicago area Gameday (link in my sig) and be sure to come join the fun that we will have! :D

(I noticed that you are in Chicago... ;) )

Knowing a few WW gamers, and knowing the way they play, I can see much teh funney in that statement.

Yea, Ummmm, I know the breed you are talking about. I meant the mature, excellent RPing WW fans. The rare ones. LOL. I flee from the ones you are talking about, usually in stark terror mixed with some disgust and a healthy dose of loathing ;).
