D1: Ashin's Commission (El Jefe judging)

Michael's use of Calm Emotions is a spell-like ability, deriving from his Community domain. He is not casting a spell.
I had not realized using a spell-like ability was a standard action.
Thanks for your patience.

[SBLOCK=Spell-like Abilities]Spell-Like Abilities (Sp)
Usually, a spell-like ability works just like the spell of that name. A few spell-like abilities are unique; these are explained in the text where they are described.

A spell-like ability has no verbal, somatic, or material component, nor does it require a focus or have an XP cost. The user activates it mentally. Armor never affects a spell-like ability’s use, even if the ability resembles an arcane spell with a somatic component.

A spell-like ability has a casting time of 1 standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description. Spell-like abilities cannot be used to counterspell, nor can they be counterspelled. In all other ways, a spell-like ability functions just like a spell:

Using a spell-like ability while threatened provokes attacks of opportunity. It is possible to make a Concentration check to use a spell-like ability defensively and avoid provoking an attack of opportunity. A spell-like ability can be disrupted just as a spell can be. Spell-like abilities are subject to spell resistance and to being dispelled by dispel magic. They do not function in areas where magic is suppressed or negated.

A spell-like ability usually has a limit on how often it can be used. A spell-like ability that can be used at will has no use limit.

For creatures with spell-like abilities, a designated caster level defines how difficult it is to dispel their spell-like effects and to define any level-dependent variables (such as range and duration) the abilities might have. The creature’s caster level never affects which spell-like abilities the creature has; sometimes the given caster level is lower than the level a spellcasting character would need to cast the spell of the same name. If no caster level is specified, the caster level is equal to the creature’s Hit Dice. The saving throw (if any) against a spell-like ability is:

10 + the level of the spell the ability resembles or duplicates + the creature’s Cha modifier.

(OOC: So they are like a normal spell that has been silenced, stilled, and eschewed materials. It can still be noticed well enough to take an AoO though)

Surprise Round: Almayce follows others closer, but keeps some distance (20 feet?) to the soldiers and somebody between himself and them.

Surprise Round

- Almayce ambled down the slope a little behind Hulgyr and about even with Zaeryl.
- The three soldiers were clearly surprised by the intrusion. The one who was standing shifted to a defensive stance, with both hands on his shortspear. The one who was squatting to one side, peering at the cloak, stood and did likewise. And the one who had thrown the cloak hastily scooped up the psicrystal in the folds of the cloak and stood, literally holding the cloak like a bag. Ironwolf's psicrystal didn't really comprehend that any sort of opportunity for escape had presented itself.

"Wha-...oh, uh", one of them gaped. Seeing Michael with his clerical symbols displayed, the three softened their stance just a bit. Recovering from his shock, the one who had started to speak continued: "Greetings, travellers. I'm sorry but the path to Duvik is closed. Too dangerous."

Round 1

- Hulgyr 14
- Zaeryl 14
- Michael 10
- Soldiers 10
- Ironwolf 8
- Eternity 8
- Almayce 1

Hulgyr up next.

Seeing that the others catched up Hulgyr stumbles a bit on his words and looks at his companions expectingly "Yes, uhmmm, they are, it is. Greetings!"

Michael turns to the highest ranking soldier: if he can't tell, he addresses the one who spoke to him.

"I know, brother. That's why we've come."
Michael beckons everyone to come closer in a peaceful way.

"My companions and I were sent by Sela to meet this danger. You've done well to hold it in check."

(If Michael has a moment, he will invoke Calm Emotions.)

Michael tried to spot some insignia, but wasn't able to tell which one of the three warriors was in charge. He decided to simply speak to the one who had spoken, which was the one who was standing when Hulgyr surpised them all.

At least one of the soldiers cocked his head in what seemed like a good imitation of a dog trying to understand something unfamiliar.

OoC: It's a regular round, soo...I'll assume Michael takes a 5' step to ensure all the soldiers are in range, and with a little concentration, the spell-like ability is invoked.

IC: The soldier whom Michael addressed relaxed some, releasing his spear with one hand and resting its butt on the ground with the other. The other two seemed unaffected; the one brandishing a spear took a step backward and the one with the psicrystal finally fumbled around and picked up his spear, holding it awkwardly with one hand with the cloak (and Ironwolf's psicrystal) in the other.

The one resting his spear on the ground spoke again: "Sent by who?", he asked in puzzlement. Realizing that Michael meant that he was sent by his god, the soldier chuckled. "Oh, I don't know if that'll be good enough. We're not supposed to let anyone through without a pass from the Cap'n down in Kinthriver." His companions shot him nervous glances, which he returned with a look that said, "don't worry, they're harmless."[sblock=Rystil Arden]Ok, I didn't think this would matter, but I hadn't realized that Swarm of Crystals affected a 15' cone. I've been looking at graph paper, and I honestly can't figure out how Zaeryl could have started anywhere near Hulgyr, moved 30' to Hulgyr's 40', and still be in range to hit 3 soldiers in adjacent squares (in any formation you like) without hitting Hulgyr. For that matter, I don't see how you can start 50' from your target, move 30', and hit him with a power that has a range of 15'. So, you can still ready the power during round 1, but if you're going to have any chance of hitting you're going to have to move a little bit. Unless you're going way out to one side, I think that brings us to...(see below)[/sblock][sblock=Hulgyr, Zaeryl, Ironwolf and Almayce: ][sblock=Make a DC13 Will save or suffer this effect: ]You feel very relaxed and do not see this situation as threatening in any way. You certainly don't feel like attacking these poor soldiers, who after all are just poor working stiffs doing their job. Not that you wouldn't defend yourself if attacked. But who would do that? Not these schmucks.[/sblock][/sblock]

[SBLOCK=El Jefe]In that case, since my round came up again after Hulgyr, move me a second time to the correct spot and then I reready.[/SBLOCK]

(OOC: Will Save 15 successful. Zaeryl in outraged that Michael would dare to attack him with a mental effect, but that will have to come later...)
