(OOC: No, he doesn't get an AoO--I checked, and he threw his shortspear in round 6 and never drew his weapon nor had a chance to do so since)
OoC: No, he did throw the short spear, which is why he didn't attack Zaeryl with it. But he did draw the shortsword as a move action combined with a regular move.

Round 8[sblock=Michael, Hulgyr, Zaeryl, Eternity, Almayce: ]- Michael helped one of the soldiers who was hurt
- Hulgyr realized that all his playmates either took a nap or ran away.
- Zaeryl ran off to chase a soldier[sblock=Zaeryl: ]Per last post, Private Squatter draws his shortsword while running, but does not attack since he takes a double move. He does get an AoO when Zaeryl moves through several threatened squares at the end of his movement, and does inflict 4 hp of damage. Zaeryl does effectively cut off Private Squatter's movement, though...he will provoke an AoO from Zaeryl if he tries to run on Round 9.[/sblock][sblock=Michael, Hulgyr, Etermity, Almayce: ]Eternity trots off in nearly the opposite direction of Zaeryl and Private Squatter, and disappears into the forest.[sblock=Eternity: ]A double move places Eternity 5' from Kallie, allowing a mount as a move action after a 5' step next turn.[/sblock][/sblock]Almayce 1[/sblock][sblock=Ironwolf: ]-Ironwolf ran into the forest after a soldier, and heard lots of running and yelling

Ooc: No change from last post[/sblock]

(OOC: I may just be dense, but where was this listed? I don't see him with any regular moves after round 6. You can't draw while running--it is a full-round action, not a regular move)

OoC: You know, until you brought this up, I never considered for a moment that any character with a BAB of +1 or better couldn't draw while running. I mean, you can draw while moving, right, and you can draw while double moving, right? Well, what's running but double moving at high speed in a straight line while losing your dex bonus?

And the terminology isn't normal move, which is not defined in the rules but is defined in a Skip Williams article on the WotC site, but regular move, which as far as I can tell isn't defined anywhere. Running seems pretty regular to me, I know people who do it every day!

And I can see it your way as well. I tried to find someplace where this had been discussed by anyone with some authority, but had no luck. I was going to just rule that this particular soldier had the Quick Draw feat, until I found a problem with that as well.

Ultimately, this is an area where the rules just don't work very well. I have a very hard time imagining the soldier slowing down more than a step or two to draw a weapon, and although I can imagine him running weaponless once he's escaped from combat, I can't imagine him continuing to do so if Zaeryl is able to pursue him closely. I can imagine him running with weapon out, pointed toward his enemy (should the enemy threated to draw alongside him or surpass him). I can imagine him stopping to fight should flight prove hopeless, and I can imagine him fighting as he runs (essentially, trading AoOs). I have a hard time imagining him running for a turn when Zaeryl doesn't and then having Zaeryl passing him up on the next turn, but the rules say that's possible.

At any rate, I've neglected the soldier's Round 8 actions, so let's deal with that now.[sblock=Zaeryl: ]Let's say Zaeryl is uninjured for now. The soldier draws his weapon, and runs (double move, not quadruple move) off in the direction of Duvik, only a little closer to the path instead of away from it. Roll your AoO as he passes you once again. If you don't drop him, he moves 60' from where he's at.[/sblock]Almayce is still up.

Round 8[sblock=Michael, Hulgyr, Zaeryl, Eternity, Almayce: ]- Michael helped one of the soldiers who was hurt
- Hulgyr realized that all his playmates either took a nap or ran away.
- Zaeryl ran off to chase a soldier[sblock=Zaeryl: ]No AoO damage vs. Zaeryl, still waiting for you to roll AoO on Private Squatter when he takes his Round 8 move.[/sblock][sblock=Michael, Hulgyr, Eternity, Almayce: ]- Eternity and Almayce decided to go for a horsey ride and went to do that.[/sblock][/sblock][sblock=Ironwolf: ]-Ironwolf ran into the forest after a soldier, and heard lots of running and yelling[/sblock]OoC: I have one last bit of cleanup for Zaeryl, and Round 8 is complete. Since he's way off in the woods, we can probably start Round 9 without him.

Round 9

Michael 10
Hulgyr 10
Ironwolf 8
Zaeryl 8
Private Squatter? 8
Eternity 8
Almayce 1

Michael runs for his horse.
If he has time, he mounts up.
If he has time after that, he listens for signs of an alarm coming from the camp.

(Between the trees and the running, I'm not sure Michael can reach his horse and mount.)

ooc: if this isn't the most confusing encounter ever i don't know...

Yeah, I'm having a lot of trouble following it too.

If Ironwolf ever gets sight of the badguy, I guess he'll try chucking a javelin... though he seems more likely to get completely lost in the woods at this rate!

Round 8 (still waiting on Zaeryl, everyone else proceed to Round 9:)[sblock=Michael, Hulgyr, Zaeryl, Eternity, Almayce: ]- Michael helped one of the soldiers who was hurt
- Hulgyr realized that all his playmates either took a nap or ran away.
- Zaeryl ran off to chase a soldier[sblock=Zaeryl: ]No AoO damage vs. Zaeryl, still waiting for you to roll AoO on Private Squatter when he takes his Round 8 move.[/sblock][sblock=Michael, Hulgyr, Eternity, Almayce: ]- Eternity and Almayce decided to go for a horsey ride and went to do that.[/sblock][/sblock][sblock=Ironwolf: ]-Ironwolf ran into the forest after a soldier, and heard lots of running and yelling[/sblock]Round 9[sblock=Michael, Hulgyr, Eternity, Almayce: ]Having stabilized the fallen soldier, Michael dashed off in the direction of Kinthriver, hoping that his mount would still be waiting for him. Hulgyr followed him, still hanging on to Ironwolf's psicrsytal, and thanks to years of chasing game through the wilderness, caught and passed the heavily armored cleric. Neither reached his mount, but both could see Eternity and Almayce ahead, who were making preparations to mount up and ride away.

- Michael and Hulgyr decided to go for a horsey ride, too, and ran to their horses.[/sblock][sblock=Ironwolf: ]OoC: Let me try to help here. Ironwolf dashed into the woods behind Michael and Hulgyr. When Ironwolf veered to his right (toward Duvik) last turn, he lost sight of those two. He's pretty sure that they are ahead and to his left, although it sounds like they said something about "horses" and headed off in that direction. As you're chasing someone(?) who is running through the woods toward Duvik, the horses would be to your left and a little behind you...at least that's where you left them. I presume you're trying to get whoever is running through the woods (and you think there may be two of them) toward Duvik in visual range so you can toss a javelin at them? Well, if so...[sblock=IC: ]Ironwolf thought that whoever was running was going fast. He wasn't running at his fastest, but he could never throw a javelin if he did. However, whoever was crashing through the branches ahead of him was going faster than he could possibly sprint, unless at the very least he dropped the soldier he was carrying. Even then he doubted he could close the distance.

What he did realize was that whoever was running was turning back in his direction, maybe trying to find their way back to the path. Ironwolf couldn't really tell if he could successfully cut them off or not, but he was sure that if he kept running, he'd find out soon.

OoC: I've got Ironwolf double moving at 20'+20'=40' toward someone moving away from the horses. They are quadruple moving, still headed toward Duvik, but doubling back your way. You'd guess that they're still 40-50' away from you (at the end of your double move). You haven't picked your quarry out yet as the trees provide concealment at this range, but are pretty sure you could at least try a long javelin throw if you could just see him.

Uh, and you think there might be two of them, too.[/sblock][/sblock]Zaeryl 8
