D1: Ashin's Commission (El Jefe judging)

"Hurry up.", Almayce mumbles to himself, since everybody else seems to have left somewhere.

Almayce rides after Eternity and/or Zaeryl.

"Ride." Michael says sharply, and takes his own advice.
He hauls his horses head around again...the horse looks bewildered...points the horses head away from Duvik, and rakes its side with his spurs.
The demon-horse is too surprised to squeal, and gallops off.

(OOC: Rather than keep the horse going someplace specific, Michael is steering away from Duvik and into open terrain where the horse can run freely. He probably has all he can do to hang on and steer, so he's not looking up to follow people.)

The combat, such as it was, was over. The adventurers, all mounted, rode swiftly in the direction of Kinthriver, Zaeryl in the lead, and Ironwolf and Hulgyr (burdened with riding double as they were) bringing up the rear.

OoC: Ok, here's the deal. You are all still in the woods, and quite spread out, so that you really don't all see each other very well. Eternity can keep Zaeryl in sight. Almayce currently has Eternity in sight, but can't keep up with the first two. Behind him is Michael, at the same pace, and then Ironwolf and Hulgyr bringing up the rear. One of you has a heavy horse (Ironwolf?), and will sloooowly fall behind the others. So:[sblock=Zaeryl: ]You've got the fastest horse and are leading the parade. How long/far are you going to go? Eventually you will hit the road that goes northeast from Kinthriver (the one you turned off of to go to Duvik) if you continue on a straight line.[/sblock][sblock=Hulgyr: ]You've got the soldier that Zaeryl was dragging, right? How long/far do you want to ride before stopping to check on his condition (I won't let you do this at full gallop).[/sblock]

*Zaeryl is going to continue past the road--that's too obvious of a place to check--looking for a place at a decent distance with good cover so they won't be immediately spotted without taking special care to check there (a cave in the hills is a good example of this).*

[sblock=Zaeryl: ]Well, there is a genuine paucity of caves in this terrain. Think southern Colorado and it's box canyons, and you have an idea of the kind of country you're in. Um, it's about 3 miles to the road, which is in the middle of a shallow canyon. If you keep going away from Duvik, you'll climb the far wall and be over the far ridge after about another mile. Unless you built a big fire, you'd at least have the ridge between you and Duvik, and the probable location of the Soldier's camp. Kinthriver would be some days ride back though the shallow canyon with the road, so it would probably take them at least a couple of days to find you...and that's if they had soldiers at the intersection of the road and the path to Duvik right this minute.

So, where is Zaeryl going?[/sblock]

Michael puts his head down and does things to the horse that would ordinarily make him ashamed, but he needs the speed.
He'd like to head for a high point where he can look over his back-trail and see if he's pursued.
The convenience of the landscape may make this the point at which Zaeryl's heading, but if not, Michael can live very well without ever seeing Zaeryl again.

As it turned out, Zaeryl led the party down the steep canyon that they had climbed to find the three soldiers and into the broader valley with the road that they had joined after skirting Kinthriver. But instead of turning left toward Kinthriver or right to ride away, Zaeryl crossed the road and started heading up the other side of the valley.

OoC: Still looking for an input for Hulgyr...

Hulgyr will keep riding until he is sure there isn;t anybody behind him. So he checks his back regulary and when he crossed some (largish) open space and doesn't see anybody following he'll check.

[sblock=Hulgyr: ]There aren't any largish open spaces, the forest is fairly thick (not thick enough to impede movement, but definitely obscuring vision for more than a few tens of yards). Hulgyr eventually decides to check on his charge when the party crosses the road at the bottom of the canyon, where it spills out into the shallow valley with the road to Kithriver. There, Hulgyr leans that Private Squatter is stable but near death (you would estimate between -5 and -10).[/sblock]

Zaeryl led the party across the broad valley at the foot of the canyon, and up the far side. Just as some of the party members thought he'd lost his mind completely (they'd been riding for nearly a third of an hour, at breakneck speeds), the ridge seperating the valley from the next drew near. Once safely over the ridge, he halted, and the party formed up, their horses exhausted from the run.
