"I'm going to try turning him over to the local authorities, or possibly a resistance group if there is one. They're likely to be in a better position than we are to hold a prisoner of war. Failing that, I'm going to tell him if I see him in this area again he's a dead man, and then let him go."

*Zaeryl puts a palm on his forehead and shakes his head.*

"In which case, he will go directly back to his army once out of sight and give them all the intel they need to eliminate us, not to mention rejuvenating the ranks of the enemy in case we need to fight them again. If you don't kill him, you need to detain him, or else we might as well give up ever defeating them. If failing to kill is so important to you, then giving up is an option. Otherwise, you must be willing to accept that winning requires killing."

"That assumes, of course, the rather likely event that Fallon is our enemy here that must be defeated to save Duvik. If not, releasing the soldiers is not quite as self-defeating."

"I don't kill people based on assumptions. We're not at full scale war yet, and we may not be. If that changes, we may not be taking more prisoners. We'll still have to treat the ones we did take honorably. I don't think fighting this particular soldier twice is going to make much difference in the long run, even if he does attack us again as soon as he is able."

"More dangerous will be the information he gives our enemies. At the moment, they heard a horn and their men vanished. That could have been anything from a pack of starving wolves to a monster to an army, but it happens to be us. Giving them that knowledge puts us at a significant disadvantage."

"We concur. As long as we are sufficiently able to help the people of Duvik without being compromised, there is no reason not to release them. However, if the time comes, statistically, if the deaths of three enemies yield even a 10% increase in probability of saving 500 innocents, we would be remiss to ignore those odds."

"I've heard someone say 'He who saves a life saves an entire world.' The problem with your mathematics is that you assume the value of life to be finite. It is not. 5 infinities cannot be meaningfully compared to 500 infinities. Such calculations lead you astray. Our first responsibility as sentient creatures is to do no evil, only after that can we work toward the greater good."

"If saving every life in the known world would require the sacrifice of an innocent, I would let the world burn."

Ironwolf is quiet for a moment. Then, with a small smile he continues.

"Such arguments are purely hypothetical in any event... in reality, there are no such dilemmas. There are always more choices if you are clever enough to find them."

"I agree that we're not going to kill anyone, at least yet. We'll make some distance, and I can cast a spell or two that will help to find out whether there's something fishy going on or not. I can cast a spell to prevent somebody from lying and read a part of person's thoughts. That should be enough to clear the matter at least a bit, whether the soldier will cooperate or not."

"As for whether we could let the man go, I doubt that the information he can give will be of much help. The soldier(s) we left behind have already or will tell about us to the rest of the army or whatever. And I don't remember anyone mentioning their names to them either, and we should keep it that way."

Almayce is following Ironwolf, since he can't really see any flaws in the plan or think a better one.

OOC: Didn't we leave at least one soldier behind and alive? If not, ignore Almayce's last comment.

OoC: Well, there were these three soldiers checking out Ironwolf's psicrystal, and you have two with you now...
