D1: Ashin's Commission (El Jefe judging)

(OOC: Huh? We definitely got all three. The first one in the forest all three people grabbed, Zaeryl nabbed his, and Ironwolf and Hulgyr got theirs. Leaving one behind would have been patently idiotic, and Zaeryl would not have stood for it. I remember seeing that we had them all, but I could have been wrong out of character. Nevertheless, Zaeryl can count to three, and if he didn't see all three, first of all what the heck happened to the third one? Second of all, he would have dealt with it--I think it isn't any stretch of the imagination to say that you can see from just about everything Zaeryl has said and done that it was under the assumption we had all three. I'm going to go dredge up whatever info I can find, but I'm going to preemptively ponder that the cause may be what I'm beginning to suspect is the major problem that caused all the confusion, which is those 'cutesy' descriptions that weren't actually accurate descriptions)

(OOC: Okay, I went back and checked, and I don't see at any point where we failed to have all three bodies. Thus, since I didn't have any information to the contrary, I assumed Zaeryl saw that we had all of them as well. Can we please say that we have all three?)

OOC (One had only subdual damage and could conceivably have waked up, I suppose. Or played possum. I'd think someone would have noticed them leaving, but we were in a hurry.)

ooc: Most of what happened was in spoiler blocks I didn't (and wasn't supposed to) read. I've only seen two prisoners... I had thought you guys must have killed the third guard.

(OOC: Aye. Which one do you think they think we didn't bring. Zaeryl's, Ironwolf's or Eternity's?)
OoC: That would be the one that Eternity dropped and that Michael healed. Let's go nice and slow:

1. Private Squatter was one of the two who chased after Zaeryl in the forest. He was injured by Zaeryl's crystal blast, then ran off in the direction of Duvik. He got pinged by Almayce's crossbow bolt as he ran, then finally beaned by Zaeryl. Zaeryl dragged him halfway back to where the party had left the horses, where he was met by a mounted Hulgyr. Private Squatter was deposited on Hulgyr's mount, where he still resides.

2. Private Kneeler was gang-tackled and pummeled to unconsciousness by Hulgyr and Ironwolf (Michael would have helped, but it became a moot point). Hulgyr ran off into the woods, attracted by the sounds of Zaeryl and Private Squatter. Michael ran into the woods in a slightly different direction, and converged on the Eternity/Almayce/Private Stander group. Ironwolf stopped to pick up Private Kneeler and carry him, following behind and out of sight of Hulgyr. Hulgyr gave up the chase and joined the Eternity/Almayce/Michael group, but Ironwolf trudged on until he met up with Zaeryl dragging Private Squatter on the return trip. He then turned toward the rest of the group, and was eventually met by Almayce who was leading his horse. Ironwolf loaded Private Kneeler on his own mount, shrunk back to normal size, mounted up, and rode off. Private Kneeler is still on the back of Ironwolf's horse.

3. Private Stander, the oestensible leader, followed Zaeryl into the woods with Private Squatter. When he winded his horn, he got blasted and dropped by Eternity. He laid there for a time, until Michael stabilized him. Eternity made ready to stabilize him in case Michael's check falied, but that wasn't necessary. Eternity then immediately made for her horse, as did Michael and Almayce. Hulgyr followed, and was able to outrun Michael to the horses. Nobody bothered to pick up the limp form of Private Stander.

If I might quote from a spoiler block that was labled for the eyes of Michael, Hulgyr, Eternity, and Almayce:

Having stabilized the fallen soldier, Michael dashed off in the direction of Kinthriver, hoping that his mount would still be waiting for him. Hulgyr followed him, still hanging on to Ironwolf's psicrsytal, and thanks to years of chasing game through the wilderness, caught and passed the heavily armored cleric. Neither reached his mount, but both could see Eternity and Almayce ahead, who were making preparations to mount up and ride away.
Believe me, I watched all of you guys pretty closely to see if anyone would stop and pick him up. You didn't. The explanation is pretty simple: You got split up and lost visibility of each other. Nobody was "in charge" and taking responsiblity for the actions of other party members. Most of you were dealing with multiple distractions, among which were one of the soldiers (Private Squatter) trying to make a getaway, rounding up lost party members, making sure that none of the injured/unconsious soldiers were in immediate peril, concern that summoned reinforcements would soon be arriving, finding your horses, and making a quick getaway yourselves. Not all of you had to deal with all of those distractions, but most of you had to deal with most of them. And then, you all ended up riding for your lives, strung out in a long line, with most of you only able to see the rider directly ahead and the rider directly behind you. So, I'm not really surprised that the first time you all group up, after nearly an hour of hard riding over difficult terrain, you all count, "One, Two, Oh Sugar!" (as Morrus's grandmother would put it).

(OOC: This is ridiculous--it conflates in-character with out-of-character and would have been quite obvious, particularly to Eternity who was right there. These characters aren't morons. You saw Zaeryl stating flatly several times that they had them all (as it would have been obvious at all of those times that they didn't).

But you know what, this isn't worth it to me--this game is generating OOC grief at an incredible rate and has stopped being fun (when Zaeryl had to chew out Michael, it was already going along that path, as I don't like saying stuff like that OOC--sorry ajanders :(). This particular incident may not have been fatal, but it demonstrates a state of mind that I'd rather not have to deal with--ask the players in my games and they'll tell you that when my explanations are vague or I see them doing something that is patently moronic due to my power as GM to realise that 'technically you dropped the one you thought you had' or the like, I always always point it out with "Are you sure you want to..."

But you certainly don't have to do that, and I'm aware that the other way has its adherents. I am not one of them. I'd like to drop out of this game--in a game, the most important thing is having fun, and I'm not.)

(OOC: I realise that may have come across harsher than I intended. I don't think any one way is the 'right' way, and I don't think this makes you a bad or unskilled GM, it's just that I don't think our playstyles match--it's kinda like that thread in general a few weeks ago about the GM who didn't let his players spot some Darkmantles despite rolling 32 on Spot since they didn't say "We are looking up". I can see how that could add verisimilitude for some people, but it just rubs me the wrong way)

OOC: First, RA, I'm genuinely sorry that this hasn't been enjoyable for you. I think I can understand some of your frustration as a player. In other circumstances, the party would easily have been able to deal with three relatively low-level NPCs, and as a player, I can see why you would be frustrated that it proved to be very difficult for your character to accomplish that. I started this thing with some pretty clear instructions from doghead as to how this was likely to play out, but the party quickly thwarted that. At that point, my goal was to just let the PCs and NPCs interact with each other in a manner that was consistent with my understanding of the NPCs' characters, motivations, and capabilities. Aside from a couple of rules hiccups and retcons (for which I am grateful to you, RA, for educating me on some of the finer points of the rules), I think that's pretty much what happened. Again, I'm sorry that you didn't find that entertaining as a player.

Second, I'd like to declare a 24-hour cooling off period. During that time, I'll read and respond (if I feel that a response is appropriate) to any post here, doing my very best to leave my ego out of the discussion. It's hard to read emotion over the net, but I have been sensing that RA isn't the only person here who is feeling some frustration. If there is some lingering resentment, I'd rather get it out in the open and deal with it rather than let it fester until someone drops out of LEW altogether.

Third, looking over my last post, I can see how it could be interpreted as conflating IC and OOC. My apologies for not writing more clearly, that was not my intent. I'm not here to play a game of "gotcha" with the other players, and I thought I did slow down several times to explain what was to me a very complex and confusing encounter to the players. Due to the nature of the encounter, no player had a "God's eye view" of the counter, mainly because no character could take in the whole of what was going on. My goal was to ensure that each player was aware of everything that player's character knew, no more, no less. Most of the "you"s in that last post should be directed toward the characters, not the players, meaning that the comments were directed IC, not OoC. I don't think that Eternity acted like a moron at all...given what was posted by me and by E13, I assumed that Eternity's priorities were to ensure that Private Stander was stable, and then to get the heck out of there. E13 didn't post anything about "let's make sure he doesn't get back to camp" or "let's make sure we pick him up" or "Eternity is going to fetch her horse and then ride back to the prone form of Private Stander" or anything like that. Given that, I thought that when I posted...

"Having stabilized the fallen soldier, Michael dashed off in the direction of Kinthriver, hoping that his mount would still be waiting for him. Hulgyr followed him, still hanging on to Ironwolf's psicrsytal, and thanks to years of chasing game through the wilderness, caught and passed the heavily armored cleric. Neither reached his mount, but both could see Eternity and Almayce ahead, who were making preparations to mount up and ride away."

...that I was being perfectly clear to the 4 players who that post was intended for. And if anyone would have posted something like, "OOC: Wait a minute, who's got the soldier?", I would have patiently explained, "OoC: Nobody", just like I did when it finally did come up in game. And if someone would have posted, "OoC: Hold it, I thought ____ picked up Private Stander", I'd have posted something like, "OoC: I don't see anything like that in post xxx, yyy, or zzz". At which point it either would have been retconned, or I'd point out that character ____ could head back over to the prone form of Private Stander and pick him up on the next turn.

Obvious (or even likely) miscommunications, I can deal with. But OoC, I'm not a telepath. Based on posted actions, I'd likely have been more sensitive to Zaeryl wanting to ensure that all 3 soldiers were accounted for before riding off than I would for Eternity, that's just a matter of deciphering RA's posting style, E13's posting style, and the character and motivations that they've given Zaeryl and Eternity, respectively. But in the end, I'm not a mind reader, and if a player posts that their character walks right up to a fallen enemy and then immediately posts that they run over to their horse and mount up, I'm not going to assume (some prior post to the contrary notwithstanding) that their character would automatically stop to pick up or drag the character over to their horse.

Again, I'm sorry if any of you haven't enjoyed this, but I do promise to give careful consideration to any suggestions or comments that you might have.
