d20/D&D books you own: likes, dislikes, actually uses

i think i've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-70 D&D/d20 books. (they're scattered around, and i'm not going to take the time to count them up!)

at the moment, the only ones i'm considering using are my M&M books and d20 Modern (and d20 Future when it comes out). i've been seriously cooling on D&D lately.

- The core books, of course. PH, DMG, MM.
- Complete Warrior, Draconomicon, All of the original 'Splat Books', Psionics Handbook, Forge of Fury, Oriental Adventures, Sunless Citadel, Unearthed Arcana. Save for the original splat books, these have seen little use though a future campaign will use both the Draconomicon and Unearthed Arcana a great deal - that's why I bought them.
- Eberron. Love it.
- Pretty much everything Malhavok has put out. All of them have seen some use; Anger of Angels will figure prominantly in Future Campaign 1.
- Green Ronin's books for Witch, Noble, & Shaman. Testament. The psionics setting, which I mainly got for the civilization and the map. Asimar and Tiefling, the half-breeds book, and the two elves books.

Magical Medieval Societies: Western Europe

Total: 170 (last count, haven’t counted recently)

How many do I use, depends on what campaign I am running or playing in. Right now I am playing in rokugan and running one in the Wilderlands using Necromancer modules (Lost City of Barakus, Grey citadel, Morrick Mansion, Crucible of Freya, plus others planned).

I use Magical Medieval Societies, Mother of All Encounter Tables, Core Books, MM 1, 2, and FF. ToH 1 and 2 on a regular basis for the game I run. For Rokugan I am constantly referring to OA, Rokugan, Secrets of the Dragon, Magic of Rokugan, Quintessential Samurai, and Way of the Shugenja (Dm's book, not mine).

Prior to the WL campain a ran Ravenloft and made heavy use of those books. I have also ran occassional traveler games, so that book and my old Traveller/Megatraveller stuff has been used.

Between PDF's and print -- I own about 45 odd books...Rather than break down in depth...here are the 5 favourie and 5 least favourite among the non-core (PHB, DMG, MM excluded)

5 faves (in hindsight would have paid even more for them0:

1) Fields of Blood (Eden) -- scratched an itch that was building for two years -- realm management and mass battles doen (largely) right.

2) Dynasties and Demagogues (Atlas) -- incredible supplement for adding mechanical depth to political and non-combat centered adventures.

3) Arcana Unearthed (Malhavoc) -- A rare treat that embodies all that's good about the OGL -- one of the D&D's core designers - taking the building blocks of the rule system -- and creating an alternate - yet compatible set of rules that really tweaks the imagination.

4) Unearthed Arcana (WOTC) -- the one product where the WOTC in house designers really had a chance to strut their stuff -- I only use a few of the variants -- but the number will grow over time.

5) Oathbound (Bastion) -- my favourite game setting. Compelling setting -- with interesting mechanics and back story -- yet compatible with almost any other setting..

My least faves (feel my money was wasted):

1) Cry Havoc (malhavoc) -- major dissapointment that didn't scratch the itch that Fields of Blood did -- considering the design talent in the credits -- it was a particular let down.

2) Psionics Handbook (Wizards) -- so uninspiring that it turned me off psionics and killed all interest in even getting the revision.

3) Sorvery and Steam (Fantasy Flight) -- Steam punk...done poorly...bleah

4) Ravenloft campaign setting -- classic setting mauled up....boo...

5) Urban Arcana (Wizards) -- what exactly does this book do that the PHB and d20 modern combined does not?

nothing to see here out...

I HATE all my books with prestige classes! :mad:/QUOTE]

There are D20 books without prestige classes? Where? I can only think of a handful:

PHB
Monster Manual X
Kingdoms of Kalamar Campaign Setting

I'm sure there's quite a few more (including ones that I own), but not as many as one might wish.

How many d20 books? More than I care to think about. At least 3 shelves on a standard bookshelf worth.

Love AEG's single-word title books; Mercenaries is fantastic, Toolbox is something every DM should have.

Hate: Anything new by Gary Gygax. World Builder blows a$$ cheese. I have a lot of respect for the man, but he hasn't kept up.

WOTC always seems to put out quality stuff, whatever your opinion of them.

Necromancer Games books are hit-or-miss, but overall pretty good.

I can't count how many I have. I have loads of books in the Kalamar line, the Scarred Lands line, the Bluffside line, most of the Necromancer Games adventures, several Green Ronin sourcebooks, and a number of ohter setting books, including Nyambe, Codex of Erde, Arcana Unearthed etc.

I have a number of other adventures by miscellaneous publishers, including Monkeygod Enterprises and Troll Lord Games.

I have many many PDFs, including many Malhavoc ones and ones by miscellanous PDF publishers.

This excludes my WotC books, which include most books since the 3.5 revision.

Products most used: It varies tremendously on whether I DM or not and what sort of campaign it is. My current DM doens't allow unofficial stuff, so d20 sourcebooks are only good for fluff inspiration for my character.

Really, I think I have a lot of books which primarily sit on the shelf, sometimes get read, but could see immense use if I run the right sort of campaign, or play in one.

I hope to run an exalted style campaing in hte future. If I do, I'd use the following heavily: BoED, BoVD, BoHM I & II, Book of the Righteous. Probably Manual of the Planes, and I'd choose some suitable adventures as I like to use published adventures. Finally, I"d use one of the settings I have.

I recently ran the modules X4-5 in conversion and set them in Kalamar. Tomb of Horrors saw extensive use, as did the Miniatures Handbook, Lords of Darkness, and some others.

My favorite is Slaine. Its a great setting, the rules changes really fit it, its like the changed everything they needed to and left everything the same that they needed to for the setting and rules to mesh perfectly. I've really enjoyed the suppliments for it and hopefully one day I'll find them all. Its no longer in print as it was just not popular.

Urk! Let me stop you there! Where do people hear such things? :)

Slaine was and is popular, and none of its books are out of print! If you have trouble finding them, take a trip to;

Mongoose Publishing

Oooh, almost forgot!

Mongoose Publishing stuff is great! Airships, Doom Striders (no better Eberron additions I can think of :-), and Torn Asunder, Critical Hits, as well as their outstanding Slayers Guides.

Great stuff!

TYhat's good to hear. As to where I heard that: at the Mongoose boothe at Origins. I talked to someone tyhere about Slaine as I was really hoping to find the few books of the series I don't have but was told they would be really tough to find now that they are out of print. So, I apologize for spreading an untrue rumor.
