d20 Future preview is up!

Hmph! If they did, do you honestly think this will bring back the Alternity fan community back to WotC? I don't think so.
Never crossed my mind. I'm just saying, Alternity was tres kewl, so please steal liberally from it.

Personally, they should attract Top Secret and Star Frontier fans.
All 10 of them? :p

Pardon the thread hijack...

Do you think we tend to overestimate the size of the fan base for various second- and third-tier games?

Didn't someone over on rpg.net announce that the most recent "Unknown Armies" product sold only 600 copies or something like that?

But I tell you what...I played the hell out of Top Secret S.I., fifteen years ago...

Well.... I'm here... Who are the other 9?
raises hand "Present"

Star Frontiers, Top Secret S.I., Palladium's Robotech, and Cyberpunk 2020 were the pinnacle of modern/post-modern roleplaying for me. Looks like with d20 Future I'll be able to revisit all of the above. Can't. wait.

but IIRC the "effective range" of the weapon is based on firing range performance, not necessarily real-world conditions.

Well, I was talking about in-game, so replicating real-world conditions, but... um... I'll stop beating this horse. We don't want him to die :)

Yes, hence my joke. I can see targeting a general gamer nostalgia by including elements from, e.g., Sar Fontiers in a product, but I think it's kinda silly to think WotC would want to *specifically* target fans of some 20-years-out-of-print games. It's such an insignificant fraction of the print run that I can't fathom why they would want to.

...other than, as I suspect, a general interest among the designers in doing cool things.

"Hey, Star Frontiers was pretty cool back in the day. Why don't we throw in some dralasites?"

"Dude! Sweet!"

:)

I'm enough of a nerd to appreciate this sort of stuff even when I never played the original game.

Hell, I'd freak if they gave "F.R.E.E.Lancers" a shout-out in d20 Future....

yeah, i'm sure it's mostly a "Dude! Sweet!" kinda thing. i doubt they have any intention (or desire) to make d20 Future be d20 Star Frontiers or d20 Star*Drive or anything else like that. more likely, someone said, "hey, let's include some sample alien races in the book." and someone else said, "well, we own the rights to the Star Frontiers races, why bother re-inventing the wheel? go ahead and throw them in."

Let's be honest, I have all the setting information for Star*Drive and just need a consistant ruleset for it.

Heck, at one point, I wrote up all of the races for stardrive, along with klicks and kroath. Printed it up on the wizards board. Still have people asking me about that...
